    • Being a responsible Internet user
Advantages and disadvantages of Internet use
      Created by 9X1IST students
      James Cook Boys (Sydney Australia)
      For Digiteen Project 09-3
    • Advantages – digital literacy
We are the first generation to grow up with the internet.
In order for usto collaborate effectively, weneed to use proper English.
In all assignments and wikis weshould not use SMS language – instead we should write in a professional manner.
    • Advantage: communication
The internet allows us to communicate with other people all over the world.
Wecan also chat with friends without actually meeting them in person, which also gives us a wider choice of friends.
    • Advantage: literacy in computer games
Video games can help usto improve our literacy, by having to understand instructions.
Being able to read is a very important skill.
    • Advantage: online shopping
Buying things over the internet means that wecan find any product that weare interested in.
We are able to compare prices and products and find information about the products online.
    • Advantage: sharing with others
Internet access allows us to log onto msn, facebook, beboetc - allowing usto contact friends and family.
With these connections comes great responsibility, which means weshould not post personal details or explicit pictures of ourselves.
    • Disadvantage: overuse & addiction
Too much of anything is bad for you: this is proved by a man dying after gaming for 48 hours straight, who was deprived of sleep and proper meals and fluids.
There has a link between computer games and health ailments, such as RSI.
Some people may become reclusive instead of participating in real life.
    • Disadvantage: piracy
Some people use computer games illegally or download cracked copies.
Many people download DVDs or mp3s, which is also illegal because it cheats corporations out of profits.
Media pirates can end up in jail.
    • Disadvantage: slander & cyber-bullying
You need to be careful about what you say on the internet because slanderous language should not be used.
This is called libel and you could end up in jail, for writing untrue information.
Some people are also affected by cyber-bullying. It is wrong to be mean via the internet and if you are bullied online, make sure you tell an adult.
    • Disadvantage: Health problems
RSI stands for Repetitive Strain Injury.
RSI is when you perform a task for a long time such as gaming or typing and you over-do it.
After a while your arms or legs or whatever you are using get sore and start to cramp up and tendonitis may occur.
    • Rights and responsibilities
The government has given us a free laptop and we need to realise that we are privileged to have this wonderful technology.
We have to be responsible with the laptop by doing the right thing and by not mistreating them.
Think about your behaviour online and treat everyone appropriately.
