Measuring system A measuring system consists of:• TurbiMax W CUS 41 solids contentsensor• Liquisys CUM M 223/253 transmitterFunctional principle The 90° scattered light method witha measuring frequency in thenear-infrared range of light (880 nm)according to ISO 7027 / EN 27027guarantees a measurement of theturbidity value under standardised,comparable conditions.The excitation radiation of an infraredtransmitter strikes the medium at adefined angle of beam. The differentrefractive indices of the entrancewindow and the measuring medium(water) are taken into account. Particlesin the medium generate a scatteredradiation which strikes the scatteredlight receiver at a defined angle. Themeasurement in the medium isconstantly adjusted with the values ofa reference receiver.Digital filter functions with an excellentinterference signal suppression andsensor self-monitoring ensure additionalmeasurement reliability.In addition to the turbidity signal, atemperature measurement signal isdetected and transmitted.Calibration Every sensor in the “FNU field ofapplication” is carefully factory-calibrated using standard procedures.Other customer- and substance-specificcalibrations can also be stored.Depending on the different preciserequirements in service or drinkingwater, special assemblies with theintegrated calibration values areprovided.For service water measurements,standard specifications are usuallysufficient. However, installing the sensorin a pipe or very close to a wall cancause backscatter resulting in a highersignal.   3. 3. Notes on installationand applicationWall distanceThe effective wall or floor distance canbe optimised by aligning with the flatsensor side. The opposite figure showsthe influence of this distance on themeasurement with bright or darkshading of wall or floor.As a rule, the CUS 41 sensor should beimmersed at least 4 cm into the mediumto be measured.Self-cleaningOptimum self-cleaning and sufficientwall distance (e.g. in narrow channels)are achieved by turning the inclinedsensor surface into the flow direction.Some time after initial operation, thesensor should be checked for dirt. Toclean it, wipe with a soft cloth. The mostfavourable sensor position should bemaintained. Should self-cleaning not besufficient, then we recommend the wipersensor CUS 41-W or the spray cleanerCUR 4 – especially for media whichtend to deposit sludge films or crusts.Installation inimmersion assembliesNoteWhen installing CUS 41 in an immersionassembly, such as CYA 611 with apendulum frame, please note thatsufficient wall distance must bemaintained during the measuringprocess. The assembly should beinstalled where a minimum wall distanceof 15 cm is guaranteed even withvarying medium levels or changing flowconditions. Pipe installation Notes• The pipe diameter must be at leastDN 100 when shiny materials (e.g.stainless steel) are used.• Install the sensor in places withuniform flow conditions.Do not install it in places where airmay collect, where foam bubbles arelikely to form (➀) or where suspendedsolids may settle (➁).• Install the sensor surface against themedium flow.Mounting• Lead connection cable through sleeveand hexagon coupling without twisting it.• Insert sensor body into the sleeve sothat the O-ring adjoins under the G 1"screw thread in the sleeve.Note marking pin and marking hole onthe sleeve.• Install CUS 41 into the adapter in sucha way that the acute-angled edge ofthe sensor lies opposite to the markinghole and points away from it. Thishelps avoid air pockets.• Installing the sensor parallel to themedium flow is necessary:– for turbidities < 5 FNU to minimisewall reflection effects.Also carry out installation adjustment!– in conjunction with the spray headCUR 3.• Installing the sensor against themedium flow is used to increaseself-cleaning effects:– in heavily soiled media withturbidities > 15 FNU, where wallreflections can in any case beneglected due to the highabsorption rate.Sensor orientation parallel to themedium flowThe sensor is inserted into the union nut.Loosely tighten the hexagon couplingon the G 1" thread of the sensor. Whenthe sensor is inserted with the sleeve on,the fitting hole on the upper edge of theassembly accommodates the lockingpin. Position the sensor by turning it insuch a way that the sharp edge formedby inclined sensor surface and sensorcylinder lies opposite the marking pinand points away from it.   7. 7. Turbidity sensor withwiper cleaningThe CUS 31/41-W sensors are bothequipped with a screen wiper. Thecleaning times and intervals are enteredinto the Liquisys M CUM 223/253transmitter. For optimum cleaning, wipertiming is adjustable.Checking the rest position• Pull the sensor from the assembly.• Moisten the sensor surface.• Set type of cleaning and cleaningtimes on the transmitter and start thewiping cycle.• Check the wiper movement (cycle) onthe sensor. The wiper must reach therest position (see figure).Caution:Do not move the wiper armby hand!Note:If the wiper comes to rest overthe measuring windows, thenmeasuring errors will result.Maintenance andcleaningDeposits on the sensor optics mayresult in inaccurate measurement.Therefore the sensor must be cleaned atregular intervals. The intervals arespecific to each installation and must bedetermined during operation.Clean the optics with the following agentsdepending on the type of soiling:• Clean the sensor mechanically using asoft brush.
