This presentation is a look at how the purpose of computing in organisations has changed over the past 30 years and what the current trends (especially cloud) might mean for the next 10, generally and from the perspective of those working in ICT services in universities.

  • 1. About Curtin2. A pattern of change over the past 30 years3. 2010 is the threshold for the next evolution4. The implications for ITS (and vendors) in universities
  • CITS mission: to provide services that drive change through innovation in an information and communication rich world.
  • Curtin IT Services has a strong partnership focus.
  • Project Office: Strategy aligned resource management;Directorates: Expertise and effort;Service Portfolios: Business view of what we do.
  • Even though there are high profile early adopters of technology there is a long tail to become embedded in the mainstream
  • Curtin is making several presentations at QUESTnet 2010. Tho use a meteorological metaphor:Desktop 2010 is the rainbow’s multicolour pathway for users to reach the clouds, Curtin’s Cloud Infrastructure Strategy is the heavy cumulus cloud of IaaS;Microsoft Cloud Platforms isthe wispycirrus cloud of PaaS and SaaS;Where, Why? Backs it up from the upperatmosphere to ask the big questions.
  • Our purpose, our drive, is defined by four characteristics: Focus, Relationship, Scope and Value
  • Computing becomes a business tool for big applications like HR and finance
  • Technology is critical for handling information throughout the organisation
  • Communication became a technology dependent business processBusiness Analysts emerged
  • We had a panel discussion at a recent planning day with 5 senior staff representing each faculty and representing research, T&L and administration perspectives. Everyone used the word partnership when defining what they need from us. That would not have happened 3 years ago.
  • Consider forms as an example of the revolutionary change:Manual input from paper formsWeb forms that input electronic data directly into databasesIntegrated forms that prepopulate and trigger eventsProcess oriented workflows that draw relevant information, never asking for information twice
  • The trends are leading the future predicted.
  • Our roles WILL change.
