  • 1. A Game of “ KKK ” Detroit, Michigan By : Emily Goodman
  • 2.
    • Kyron Tryon was an eighth grader at Bullock Creek Middle School near Midland, Michigan .
    • Kyron Tyron was the only African American in his grade
  • 3.
    • In May 2003, seven white boys picked Kyron off of the ground . While doing this, the boys were chanting “ KKK ”
    • The boys then threw him back on the ground and started to kick him until the bell rang .
    • Later, when the white boys were questioned about what happened they replied, “ It was just a game of KKK ”
  • 4.
    • This is not the first time that Kyron has been discriminated against .
    • “ Kyron and his older siblings have been discriminated against many times before ”
    • His parents stood up for him and took action.
  • 5. A Way to Help…
    • Kyron ’ s parents were not at all happy with the way the school responded to the game of “ KKK ”
    • Kyron ’ s parents contacted the ACLU(American Civil Liberties Union) and then filed a complaint with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.
    • Over the past year, the Tyrons and the school district worked together to develop a plan to provide a better environment for students of color.
  • 6. Thoughts On The Situation…
    • I think the situation with Kyron was horrible
    • It was very racist and I never thought eighth grade boys would do such a horrible thing.
    • I was so shocked by this and could not believe it.
    • I think that the boys who did this to Kyron should definitely be expelled. I think that Kyron should go to counseling to talk to someone about this situation.
  • 7.
    • The principle of the school should talk to the entire district about racism and behavior.
    • " I just want the nightmare to be over and to go back to being a teenager, " said Kyron . " If what I experienced somehow ends up helping someone else, I will be happy ."
