  • 1. INTRODUCTION TO GEOGRAPHY What is Geography? Why is Geography important? What can I remember about Geography from primary school?
  • 2. What is Geography? <ul><li>Geography is the study of all physical features of the Earth’s surface, including its climate and the distribution of plants, animals and human life </li></ul><ul><li>There are three main parts to geography. These are physical, human and environmental </li></ul>
  • 3. What is Physical Geography? <ul><li>Physical geography is the study of the earth’s natural features. It is about the land and the sea and the atmosphere around us (weather and climate), the landforms, hazards (floods, drought, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes) </li></ul>
  • 4. What is Human Geography? <ul><li>Human Geography is the study of where and how people live: </li></ul><ul><li>Population </li></ul><ul><li>Settlement </li></ul><ul><li>Communications </li></ul><ul><li>Economic </li></ul><ul><li>Quality of life </li></ul>
  • 5. What is Environmental Geography? <ul><li>The environment is the combination of the physical environment and the human. It is the study of the surroundings in which people, plants and animals live </li></ul>
  • 6. What is Environmental Geography? <ul><li>The environment includes natural resources such as coal, iron, forests or water </li></ul><ul><li>Sometimes people use them to their advantage, but people often misuse these resources by using them up (minerals), by destroying them (soils, forests) or polluting them (rivers, seas on the air) </li></ul>
  • 7. Why is Geography important? What does Geography mean to me? <ul><li>> To study Geography is the opportunity for discovering the world around us </li></ul><ul><li>> People are very concerned with their quality of life </li></ul><ul><li>> There is now a growing concern over the quality of the environment and how it may be conserved while at the same time being made as useful as possible </li></ul>
