  • This is how you might expect a typical PowerPoint to look. This type of PowerPoint is most useful if you use bullet points and lists to generate hierarchies of information. Most scholarly work and analysis is more complex than this.
  • You might decide you want to present information in a different way: non linear and dynamic. We will come back to this data cloud later in this presentation to use it to create non-linear procession in this PowerPoint presentation.
  • The first part of this presentation will focus on the basics: creating a master slide and saving a master template for future use; inserting and formatting media; animating media. The second part of the presentation will focus on an attempt to break free from the linearity of PowerPoint by playing with action buttons, links, custom shows, and hidden slides.
  • PowerPoint by default will link media larger than 100k rather than embedding them, so it’s important to keep all media in the same folder as your original PowerPoint file so there are no problems when you try to present. You can get crafty and play with preferences to change the defualt and allow .ppt and .pptx files to embed larger files by clicking on the “PowerPoint” scrolldown menu and selecting preferences. Under the “General” tab you can change the defualt size of linked media. This works for all media.
  • Make sure that when you create links on text boxes you first disable the auto formatting that will turn our link blue and underline it. Do this by selecting the “Tools” drop menu –select “ Auto Correct” – “Auto Format As You Type” tab - uncheck all boxes. This will preserve the integrity of your formatting and font color.
  • Custom shows allow you to create pathways for your links and then return to a destination. Each link can be a separate custom show. When linking to custom shows select the “Hyperlink” tab on the Formatting Palette. Click the scrolldown “On mouse click” and select “Custom Show”. Select the show you created and if you want to return back to the page where you started click the box labeled “show and return”.
  • If you are importing an image, like this one from woordle.com, and you want multiple links on the image but cannot select portions of the image you will need to improvise. Create a shape – insert an action item (URL, document, another slide, custom show) – change the fill to 99% transparent (do this by double clicking on the image). It’s essential to set the transparency to 99% rather than simply select no fill because you need something to select in order to make the link work.
  • Make sure to hide slides when linking to other slides or custom shows. This will prevent the viewer from simply clicking through the presentation and forcing linearity. Instead hidden slides will not appear when the space bar is clicked and will only appear when linked to. To hide slides select the “Slide Show” scrolldown menu, select the slide in the left pane and make sure that “Hide Slide” is selected. Hidden slides will appear shaded with a slash through the number.
  • Example I: Create a slideshow by layering images on one slide and have them fade in and out of one another using .png files of data clouds that you take from screen captures. Then create multiple links from the final image by inserting a shape and assigning it an action property.
