    • Why and How our Schools Need to be Saved
      SOS Classroom Summer 2009
      Edwin Choy
    • education is stuck in manual
    • students today would much rather…
    • go on Wikipedia…
      than go to the Library
    • go on Youtube…
      than go to class
    • if facebook were a country it would be the fourth largest in the world
    • students would rather be online
      would rather learn online
    • yet the internet is a disorganizedplace to learn
    • there are over 4 billion unique publicly accessed websites in the world
only 6 percent have educational material
    • in 2002 Nintendo invested more than $140 million in Research and Development
the US Government spent halfas much on Research and Innovation in Education
    • public education continues to struggle to keep up
    • public education in Los Angeles is struggling just as much
    • in the Summer of 2009,
LAUSD cut all summer school programs for grades K-8
225,000 children in LA take summer school every year
    • what alternatives do parents have?
      -hire costlytutors
-enroll their students in expensive private programs
      -purchase boring workbooks
    • its even harder now for parents to get free or low cost support for their children’s education
    • the SOS Classroom
A collection of online resources for grades K-8
-Comprehensive and complete; covers all areas of the elementary and middle school curriculum
-Fun and easy to access; webpage built on Pageflakes technology, easy for anyone to navigate
-Informative and appealing; animations, games, fun characters, and videos makes learning interesting for kids
    • the SOS Classroom brings education into the Digital Age
    • the SOS project depends on crowdsourcing to:
-support the educational needs of students
-use social bookmarking to organize online education
-create an ever expanding online educational index
-teach students and their parents how to perpetuate their own education
this collection of resources is just a jumping off point…
    • the SOS Classroom is more sustainable truly public education
