Lab Assignment: Part 1 ,[object Object],By: Elizabeth Magnia,[object Object]
Sedimentary Rock,[object Object],I believe this could be Silt Stone. I found this rock near Kaweah Lake. It was up in the mountains and there was a little river bed flowing down, I went down to the river bed and found this rock along with one other one. The surroundings of this rock was very green, there was lots of vegetation around, the ground was dirt but closer to the river was sand. It appeared to be a mixture of sand and dirt, there was a bunch of river rocks near and in this river, some were on the side, but a lot were in the bottom of the river. In the area around the River there were also boulders, some were smaller and others were huge. I believe that this particular rock is sedimentary because of where I found it. I know that sedimentary rocks are made by sediment sticking together and forming in the water. Sedimentary rocks can have a cement appearance and this completely jumped out at me, another thing that I recognized is that how it is fractured. It is difficult to tell in the picture but the way that it is broken it shows the characteristic of clasts because it is rigid and not a clean break. This was partly in the water and when I removed it there was bits of sand in the crevices of the fracture which I later found out is known as Matrix and that too was present. I also noticed that the outside of this rock is fairly smooth with little indentations, which suggests to me that it is made up of a bunch of different sediments but yet they are fine enough to generate a smooth feeling and appearance. ,[object Object]
Sedimentary Rock,[object Object],I think this could be Shale. I found this rock out by the Laton River. It was not super close to the river but off more to the side of it in a more secluded area. I found it in an area with quite a bit vegetation but it was a rather dry place. The dirt seemed dry but there was also a little sand that I think was carried over by the river at some point in time. I had initially thought that this rock looked like Rhyolite which is an Igneous Rock, but after taking into consideration where I found it, that was quickly ruled out because we don’t live in a volcanic area. I believe that it may be a small piece of shale because of where I found it, and also because of its appearance. It has a pretty dark color to it, and is very rough. It actually doesn’t have one smooth side to it at all. The one thing that really stands out to me though is the fact that when I look closely at it I am unable to see any grains. With the other two Sedimentary Rocks the grains were rather small but I could still see some grains in there. With this Rock it looks as one. It doesn’t look like it was made by different sediments or particles and that is a strong indication to me that it could be shale. ,[object Object]
Sedimentary Rock,[object Object],I believe that this too is a Silt Stone. I also found it up in the mountains, but this particular rock I found near Bass Lake. The Environment is very similar to that of Kaweah Lake, but instead of finding this rock near a small river. I found it near the Lake. Although the environment is very similar it is little different. Since the lake is a big pool of water , a small area around the lake does not have as much vegetation. There are still small bushes and shrubs, but not as many trees until you go a small distance to get to the trees. I found this rock right at the bed of the lake. It is quite small still compared to the one found at Kaweah. The ground near the lake also seemed to be a mixture of dirt and sand. Knowing what I know now, I now realize that this texture comes from all the sediments that are carried down in to the lake. I also believe this rock is Sedimentary because of where I found it, the conditions that it would have needed to undergone are present in the environment of which it was found. Once again it has an overall smooth appearance with some indentations, that suggests that sediments were added to it, and they were fine enough to make the rock smooth but still large enough to leave areas that aren't smooth completely. I definitely think that this rock was compacted because of the water that it was under to gather sediments to form and also cementation because of how intact that it appears to be in, it would take a fairly strong force to break this. I also think that if it were to break it would be very rigid.,[object Object]
Igneous Rock,[object Object],This Rock looks close to Granite to me. I think that it is pretty interesting where I found this rock. I decided to go out to my dads work to see if I could find anything, I went out there because he works at a Waste Water Treatment plant here in Hanford. I was hoping to maybe find something because the have wells and machinery and structures that they had to drill down to make, because of this I was hoping to maybe find something. The plant is in the outskirts of Hanford, it is surrounded by a bunch of dirt, and in the back they have some ponds for the plant. It seems like a very dry place and open place. Very little vegetation is around and it looks like nothing but dirt. There is a bunch of little gravel out there for pathways and what not, but where there is little traffic you can see the dirt. I went out by this structure and was looking around, all the rocks looked the same. When I came across this rock it immediately jumped out at me. I believe this rock is Igneous because of the different grains and the variations in the size of those grains. I think that this can be classified under Sialic because the rock is very light, the different grains that are present are different sizes and to me it looks very close to granite,. I also think that if anything, it would be granite because that is what most of the earths crust is made up of. ,[object Object]

Fault- San Andreas ,[object Object],Continental transform Fault but is similar to a strike slip fault because of the opposite direction the two plates are going. The difference between a transform and strike slip fault is that the transform fault is two different plates, and can be reoccurring earthquake activity and faulting. ,[object Object],Pictures from Google,[object Object]

Sedimentary Environments ,[object Object],I went to Morro Bay and instantly thought that this could be an example of transitional because it is in between because of the little land that breaks up the Ocean and delta of water. I used this picture because I was unable to get a picture that would clearly show the breakup of the bodies of water but this picture works great in my opinion. ,[object Object],This is at the beach, an open ocean with out any land enclosing a body of water is an example of a Marine Sedimentary Environment,[object Object],This is a Continental Sedimentary Environment because it shows stream erosion, this is at the Laton River,[object Object]
