How has technology changed our lives? <ul><li>Cell Phones and other devices allow us to be more connected </li></ul><ul><li>Texting is the most the common way to communicate among teens </li></ul><ul><li>Cells Phones and the internet has put information at our fingertips </li></ul><ul><li>Texting is cheaper than making a phone call </li></ul><ul><li>Smart phones are rapidly becoming more like a computer </li></ul><ul><li>Technology has made life more convenient….. </li></ul><ul><li>However, misuse of technology could end your life prematurely </li></ul>

Why texting while driving is so dangerous ? <ul><li>According to AAA, you spend 400% less time looking at the road when you are texting as opposed to not texting </li></ul><ul><li>The human brain isn't equipped to concentrate on two things simultaneously </li></ul><ul><li>You are 2 times more likely to be in an accident when texting than when talking on the cell phone </li></ul><ul><li>Studies have found that texting while driving slows reaction time more than being drunk or high </li></ul>

Which states have law against texting while driving? <ul><li>10 States ban all texting while driving </li></ul><ul><li>7 States have bills in place to ban the use </li></ul><ul><li>8 States have only banned novice drivers </li></ul><ul><li>25 States have no laws at all….Pennsylvania is one these states </li></ul>
  5. 5. Is it time to make changes in the law about texting while driving in PA? <ul><li>In Pennsylvania, there were 1,298 cell phone related accidents in 2008. Of those accidents, 9 resulted in death. </li></ul><ul><li>According to PennDOT, from 2002 to 2006 there were 5,715 car accidents linked to the use of handheld cell phones in PA. </li></ul><ul><li>In 2004 alone, handheld cell phone use contributed to over 1,170 Pennsylvania car crashes. </li></ul><ul><li>Accidents involving talking or texting on a cell phone rose from 168 in 2003 to 228 in 2005 in the Western Pennsylvania region. That’s a 36 % increase in over two years. </li></ul><ul><li>Cell phone-related car accidents shot up 43% in western Pennsylvania from 2003 to 2006. In 2006, cell phones caused 241 car accidents in western PA. </li></ul>

What we can do to reduce the rate of accidents because of texting? <ul><li>Do not text while driving! </li></ul><ul><li>Educate teens on the dangers </li></ul><ul><li>Be a good example for your own kids, friends, or family </li></ul><ul><li>Parents can restrict cell phone usage or text message capabilities </li></ul><ul><li>Pull over if texting or calling is necessary </li></ul>

Do we realize that we can be victims of it too? <ul><li>Because teens’ brains are not fully developed, they have the tendency to feel invincible about the possibility of becoming a victim of an accident due to texting while driving </li></ul><ul><li>Young drivers who are relatively inexperienced and who do not practice safe driving are at an even greater risk of causing an possibly fatal accident </li></ul><ul><li>However, anyone, no matter what age can fall victim if they continue to text while driving </li></ul>

Is texting while driving a bad habit or a bad decision? <ul><li>Bad decisions can lead to the formation of bad habits </li></ul><ul><li>According to Men’s Health.com, one way to break this bad habit is every time your cell rings visualize a graphic car crash and the ramifications of the accident on you, your loved ones, and the person you hit. </li></ul><ul><li>This will begin to break you of the habit but associating the cell ringing with a negative event </li></ul>

Can new technology save us? <ul><li>IZUP- app that blocks incoming calls, texts, and emails </li></ul><ul><li>CellControl- removable system that only allows selected numbers but does not allow texts, email, or the web to be accessed </li></ul><ul><li>Dragon Dictation- app reads texts to you and allows you to type a text by voice command </li></ul><ul><li>Drive Safe.ly- app that reads your texts aloud </li></ul>
