Spiral hanging decorations for childrens birthday parties
How to Make Spiral Hanging Decorations from Recycled Plastic Soda Bottles http://kids-theme-parties.com
Materials to make the spiral hangings - A few empty 2-liter soda pop bottles - Craft Knife and Sharp Scissors - White Wood Glue or Modge Podge - Paintbrush - Glitter in choice of colour - Newspaper - Fishing Line and Sharp Needle
Remove the labels from the empty 2-liter soda pop bottles. Wash and dry the bottles. Using a craft knife or sharp scissors, cut off the top and bottom of each bottle. Only the straight sides of the bottles will be used to make the hanging decorations
Cut the edges straight and then just start cutting in a spiral until you reach the bottom edge. The plastic will curve naturally into a spiral.
If you would like to add some glitter, you can do it before you cut off the top of the bottle. It is easier to hold the bottle while you apply a layer of white wood glue or Modge Podge to the straight side of the bottle. Sprinkle as much or as little glitter as you wish and leave to dry completely. Tip: Work on a newspaper or magazine to “catch” any excess glitter. Simply fold the newspaper page in half afterward and use as a funnel to pour the glitter back into the container.
Leave the bottle until the glue has dried completely, cut off the top part and then cut the straight part into a spiral as shown in the previous photos. You will now have one long spiral so you can easily cut it in half or even three or four separate spirals. Add a loop to hang the spirals by using a sharp needle to make a hole in each spiral. Thread fishing line through all the spirals, pull the fishing line up and towards you until you have a big enough loop, then push the needle and line back again through each hole.
Make a double knot in the loop, pull the fishing line tight and make another double or triple knot on the side where the fishing line comes out of the spirals. If you want to add cutout shapes like stars or flowers to the top of the spirals, do it before you make the final knots.
What Can You Do With These Spiral Hanging Decorations? Use a single spiral, or add two, three or four together to make a spiral bunch. Attach some cutouts like stars, flowers, or cutouts that fit in with the theme of the party. Hang them from the ceiling. Hang them on tree branches outside. Hang them against a wall. … as long as you hang them and watch the delight on the party guests’ faces when these spirals twirl and swirl with a life of their own.
