    • What are the energy sources we use in Greece for electric energy production?
    • The electric energy production process in Greece takes place in: A) power plants burning fossil fuel, such as lignite (brown coal), natural gas or crude oil.
    • and   B) by using alternative energy sources, such as: wind power solar power hydropower
    • Contribution of Energy sources for electric power production in Greece Lignite 60% Hydroelectric power 6% Natural gas 25% Crude oil 6% alternative sources: wind, sun 3%
    • Saving Energy The rational use of energy helps us save energy  in all areas, without lowering the living standards in buildings. Taking advantage of new systems, technologies, materials and especially  renewable energy resources, we can achieve reduced consumption of fossil fuels as well as environmental protection.
    • Immediate Measures
      • Limiting to the greatest  possible extent, the unnecessary operation of household appliances such as lights, air conditioners, water heaters, the aerators and others .
      • Planning the operation of dishwashers, washing machines and drying machines so that they are full when they are running.
      • Wherever possible,  drying  clothes physically and not by using the dryer.
    • Immediate Measures
      • The fireplace chimney in a room is the biggest source of heat loss in winter, so when not in use, it  should be tightly closed.
      • The cracks in the windows and the doors, cause great losses of heat and should be minimized .
      • Regular maintenance and regulation of the heating and air conditioning units so that they work with the maximum efficiency.
    • A few more measures
      • Proper adjustment of the thermostat
      • The door gasket of the freezer should not be damaged. Also it must be away from any source of heat and of  high efficiency .
      • Proper use of the stove according to the pot we use.
      • Proper use of the electric kettle.
      • Cleaning and maintenance of the solar water heater from dust and other dirt.
      • Replacing ordinary light bulbs with energy saving bulbs and switching off the television from the plug, not from the remote control .
    • Medium and long term measures
      • Implementation of measures for the thermal insulation of the outer shell of the building .
      • Replacement of windows with high quality i nsulated glass units .
      • Replacement of the refrigerator, air conditioner and washing machine with those of class A energy efficiency .
      • Appliances must be labeled with the amount of energy they consume.
      • Equipment must be CE marked to indicate that the device meets performance requirements and security.
      • Replace worn out solar water heaters .
      • Support or replacement of the central heating boiler that uses oil with a fireplace that burns biomass.
      • Installation of a solar system to support the central heating system .
