  • 1. POSE: a new endoscopic incisionlessweight loss operation for patients 3-5 stones overweightWhat is the POSE PROCEDURE?Dr. Elliot Goodman now offers a new and exciting weight loss procedure which isperformed through an endoscope WITHOUT any abdominal incisions. Newsurgical tools now allow surgeons to reduce the capacity of the stomach throughthe patient’s mouth without making abdominal incisions into the body. Thisoperation is known as the “POSE” procedure, which stands for Primary ObesitySurgery, Endolumenal. How do I find out if I’m eligible for this new incisionless, POSE procedure? After an initial screening, you will undergo a series of evaluations includingnutritional and dietary counseling. In addition, a full medical examination isnecessary to determine if you are a candidate. Typically patients who are 3-5stones above ideal body weight (BMI 27-35) who have tried unsuccessfully tolose weight with several less invasive methods are potential candidates forPOSE.
  • 2. What does the POSE procedure entail? The POSE procedure is performed using a small flexible endoscope and theIncisionless Operating Platform (IOP). The scope and the IOP instruments areinserted through the mouth into the stomach the same way as a standardendoscope. Tissue anchors are used to create multiple tissue folds in thestomach to reduce its capacity. These folds in your stomach reduce the amountof food it can hold so you feel fuller faster during meals and eat less. POSE mayalso reduce the production of certain stomach hormones thought to stimulateappetite, thereby further reducing calorie intake. To realize the full benefits of theprocedure, you must commit to following the diet, exercise and nutritionalcounseling programs that your doctor prescribes. What instruments are used? The POSE procedure is performed with an Incisionless Operating Platform (IOP)and a small flexible endoscope for visualization. The IOP consists of a longnarrow access platform and specialized surgical tools (that grab tissue, hold it inplace and insert anchors and sutures), all of which have received CE mark. What are the benefits of an incisionless procedure? The entire procedure is performed through the mouth and inside the stomach –not through cuts into the abdomen. By eliminating skin incisions, this newprocedure may provide important advantages to patients, including a reducedrisk of infection and associated complications, minimized pain, shorter hospitalstays, no visible external scars, plus faster recovery times. Additionally, no oneneeds to know that you have had a procedure as you can return to normalactivities within a few days. What type of side effects can I expect? Some patients have complained of a temporary sore throat and nausea followingthe procedure. These symptoms usually disappear within a few days after theprocedure. You must discuss with your doctor the full range of side-effects thatmay be encountered in this procedure. Is it safe? All procedures have some risk involved, although to date no major complicationshave been reported. The procedure is new and long-term data is not yetavailable. These incisionless procedures are typically reversible by you surgeonshould you encounter a problem. What is the success rate?It is too soon to estimate the likely procedure success rate. However, to date, theprocedure has been well tolerated and patients typically begin to see weight lossin the first 4 weeks and an earlier feeling of fullness right away. Your success willdepend to a large degree on your commitment to follow the diet, exercise andnutritional counseling programs your doctor prescribes.
  • 3. Early experience with these incisionless weight loss procedures show that onaverage, patients lose around one third of their excess weight after 6 months.Continuation of weight loss or maintenance of the new reduced weight isdependent on the determination of the “New-You” to eat less and lead a morephysically active lifestyle. What is the recovery process? Most patients will return to normal activity within a few days of their procedure.Your doctor will give you specific instructions. In addition, you will be required tofollow a post-procedure diet and exercise plan, similar to the regimen prescribedfollowing weight loss surgeries. To help you on your journey, follow-upappointments with your doctor will be required. What will the procedure cost? The cost of the procedure will be around £7000, depending on which after-carepackage you choose. All hospital charges and consultant fees for the POSEprocedure are included in the basic price.
