    • (Note: embedding turned out to be problematic …)
    • Many practical applications of VOKI
    • Recording student speech
    • Incorporation of writing/audio
    • Communication with ‘Pen Pals’
      • Increased exposure to native English speakers
      • Increased dialogue in the target language between students and classmates
USING VOKI IN THE ‘ESL’ CLASSROOM
    • ESL Applications
    • http://www.voki.com/php/viewmessage/?chsm=b3d4a22893ceec1d8333933fb49c6d48&mId=606808
    • Vocabulary
    • Students study/learn a list of new vocab words
    • They use VOKI to:
      • Record their:
      • Pronunciation of the new word
      • Use of the new word in a complete sentence
      • VOKI can give the students the opportunity to be creative and fun as they are studying the new words
    ESL ACTIVTIES:
    • ESL Classroom: Activity 1
    • http://www.voki.com/php/viewmessage/?chsm=f8793dfcd1f41bde460232a1b9c6d1e9&mId=606809
    • Online component:
    • Question & Answer
      • Teacher creates his/her own VOKI
      • Posts a discussion styles question
      • Students create their own VOKI
      • They listen to the discussion question
      • Then respond to it with their VOKI
      • Record their speech
      • Combines Listening and Speaking skills
    ESL ACTIVITIES (CONT.)
    • ESL Classroom: Activity 2

    • Grammaticality Judgments:
    • Students correct errors in sentences
      • Teacher creates VOKI
      • VOKI reads a series of sentences
      • Each sentence contains an error of the grammar point being studied
      • Students identify & correct the error
      • Students create their own VOKI
      • Using VOKI, they record the corrected version of the sentence
    ESL ACTIVITIES (CONT.)
    • ESL Classroom: Activity 3

    • Science classroom
      • Fourth Grade
      • Author of lesson plan:
        • Stephanie Bushman
    • Subject
      • studying human skeletal structure
    • Tasks were to:
      • Learn and identify bones
      • Fill out a skeletal chart
      • Create a VOKI
        • VOKI has ‘broken’ a bone
        • Students use VOKI to inform the class which bone it has broken
        • Rest of class guesses where the bone is located
AN EXAMPLE OF VOKI IN REAL WORLD USE
    • Ease of use
      • Relatively easy to get started
        • The set up is user friendly
        • No great tech requirements
        • PowerPoint embedding was easy*(see below)
          • (ppt 2010 required)
      • There were minor glitches along the way
        • Editing
          • edits made to VOKI after publishing did not always change when embedding a second time
        • Multiple versions of the same VOKI
          • For this presentation, I though it better to stay with one VOKI
          • I had to build the VOKI from scratch each time
            • Very time consuming
        • *Embedding
          • Process of embedding relatively easy, however
          • When uploading to SlideShare, & PBWorks, embeds no longer worked
          • When sending the PowerPoint as an attached file in an email, the recepient must have PowerPoint 2010 in order for embeds to work
          • In the end, I used links instead which is slightly cumbersome
    DIFFICULTIES WITH VOKI
    • Innovative
      • Skills primarily used
        • Listening
        • Speaking
        • Writing/Reading (text box option)
    • Focus:
      • More practice ; Less learning
      • This is not necessarily:
        • An ideal way for a teacher to pass on information
        • Or ideal for lectures or grammar explanation
      • This is:
        • A nice way for students to take an ‘oral test’
        • To practice oral skills in a Q & A environment
        • Give their teacher evidence of their ability to comprehend/respond to information
    SUMMARY OF VOKI
    • Goodbye
    • &
    • Thanks for listening!
    THE END
    • Wrapping things up!
