  2. 2. Before the Roman Empire<br />-The Estrucans lived in Rome before Roman Empire<br />-Influenced by the Greeks and Phoenicians.<br />-There was evidence of literature and drama.<br />-Known playwright was Volnius<br />-Wore "tebinna" aka Roman Toga<br />
  3. 3. Before the Roman Empire<br />-Aristocratic families: rich, noble descent. Rich merchants and landowners.<br />-Deep knowledge of hydrology: land drainage.<br />-Developed technique of dry farming.<br />-Lots of trade occurred.<br />

During the Roman Empire<br />-All Roman citizens could gather in periodic assemblies.<br />-SENATE: most important/mostly aristocrats.<br />-CONSULS: shared power.<br />-Cicero (writer) = Confuciunism.<br />-Emphasized crafted laws=held territory together.<br />-Twelve Tables- 1st code of law (450 BCE)<br />-Promoted importance of Common sense<br />-Romans were very intellectual<br />

During the Roman Empire<br />-Mediterranean literature and culture<br />-Monumental athletic performances<br />-Great monarchy<br />-Open to new ideas and people.<br />-Wanted to keep purity of its ancient ceremonies and freedoms.<br />-Cumbersome and toga, stola- "fashion"<br />-Temples, marketplaces, and public baths were important.<br />-Greco-Roman religion.<br />-Arches, water, uniform laws, roman numerals, Christianity, aqueducts, stadiums, and the Senate were important aspects of Roman Culture.<br />

Time Between the Fall of the Roman Empire<br />-The Roman Empire in the East survived 1000 years after the fall of the rest of the empire.<br />-The Byzantine Empire, though it was mostly Greek, kept the values and traditions of the Romans such as art, engineering, law, and government.<br />-After the fall, Roman culture wasn't important again until the Renaissance period which brought that culture back.<br />

Modern History of Rome<br />Economy<br />-Depends on tourist trade.<br />-TOURISM.<br />-City is center of banking, insurance, printing, publishing, and fashion.<br />Landmarks<br />-contains Vatican City where the Pope is located.<br />-Plazza Venezia is center of departure.<br />-The central square hold a monument to honor King Victor Emmanuel II.<br />-Also has the balcony where Mussolini gave his speeches.<br />-In the Campo Marzio quarter the Pantheon is located.<br />-World's olderst academy of music: Academia di Santa Cecilia.<br />

Modern History of Rome<br />Government<br />-Went through a facist movement with Moussilini.<br />-Moussilini lost war in 1943.<br />-Killed at Dongo in Como province in 1945. <br />Killed by a firing squad.<br />-Body was displayed for 6 months in the square so people could spit on it.<br />-Rome is now a democracy.<br />
