  • How can technology measure our motivation to stay healthy

    1. 1. HOW CAN TECHNOLOGY MEASURE Our Motivation To Stay Healthy? By Elie Noune Stanford University
    2. 2. Motivation WavesOur Motivation experiences peaks and troughs, just like the EconomyStanford Psychologist BJ Fogg calls this pattern a Motivation Wave
    3. 3. Healthy BehaviorsWe can use high periods of motivation waves to simplifyand set up healthy behaviors like: Exercising 3 days per week, Sleeping 8 hours per day, or Eating 1 fruit everyday.
    4. 4. Riding the Motivation WaveImagine your smart phone knew when you wereexperiencing Motivation ups and downs.Having Mobile Technology track our motivation wavescould drastically improve our health habits!
    5. 5. How to Track Motivation? To Detect Motivation Ups and Downs, we need a way to measure Motivation itself. However, Motivation is an abstract variable that can’t be physically measured. But it also depends on other measurable variables.
    6. 6. My guess is...We can get a good motivation estimate by measuring and analyzing 10+ physical variables that affect and reflect our motivation
    7. 7. Estimating our Motivation These ‘shadow variables’ fall into 4 categories Sleep Nutrition Movement & Use of Technology
    8. 8. Sleep MetricsSleep Quality A good night sleep can bring your motivation up. And Vice Versa. Measured with a Wristband and/or a mobile app.
    9. 9. Sleep MetricsSleep Quality A good night sleep can bring your motivation up. And Vice Versa. Measured with a Wristband and/or a mobile app.Bed Time How early or late you go to bed compared to usual? We’ll look at the time you set your alarm.

Measured with a Wristband and/or a mobile app.Bed Time How early or late you go to bed compared to usual? We’ll look at the time you set your alarm.Snoozing Duration How long did you snooze today? Longer snoozing may mean lower motivation
    11. 11. Nutrition MetricsDaily Calorie Intake Eating more than usual might mean lower motivation. Best Measured with a mobile app.
    12. 12. Nutrition MetricsDaily Calorie Intake Eating more than usual might mean lower motivation. Best Measured with a mobile app.Daily Calories Burned If you burned more than usual, chances are you’ll be more motivated. Best measured it with a wristband.
    13. 13. Nutrition MetricsDaily Calorie Intake Eating more than usual might mean lower motivation. Best Measured with a mobile app.Daily Calories Burned If you burned more than usual, chances are you’ll be more motivated. Best measured it with a wristband.Weight Tracking How would you feel if you lost 5 lbs in a week? Super motivated!
    14. 14. MovementGym RegularityYour phone can Track how often you went to the gym using your GeoLocation. If you stop going to the gym, your motivation may have fallen down.
    15. 15. MovementGym Regularity Your phone can Track how often you went to the gym using your GeoLocation. If you stop going to the gym, your motivation may have fallen down. Time spent at Home vs outdoorsSimilarly, your phone could track how much time you spend at Home vs Outdoors. Maybe more time outdoors means higher motivation?
    16. 16. Using TechnologyLogging your Activity If you’re logging your food or workout more than usual, it probably means you’re feeling motivated.
    17. 17. Using TechnologyLogging your Activity If you’re logging your food or workout more than usual, it probably means you’re feeling motivated.Social Media - Sharing Achievements When you share your workout results on Facebook, you’re definitely motivated!
    18. 18. Using TechnologyLogging your Activity If you’re logging your food or workout more than usual, it probably means you’re feeling motivated.Social Media - Sharing Achievements When you share your workout results on Facebook, you’re definitely motivated!Scheduling commitments When you book time to go to the gym on your calendar, you may be more motivated.
    19. 19. Magic Formula? We may not have one yet, but it’s likely some combination of these metrics Bed Time Daily Calorie Intake Sharing Achievements Daily Calories Burned Home vs Outdoors Activity Logging Sleep Quality Snoozing Duration Scheduling commitments Exercise Regularity Weight Tracking
