Translation Presentation Transcript

  • 1. PROTEIN SYNTHESIS: PART 2
  • 2. RNA CONTAINS FOUR BASES: A,U,G,C The genetic code is read three letters at a time, so each “word” is three bases long. Each three letter “word” is called a codon And codes for a specific amino acid.
  • 3. WHAT IS THE CODON FOR LYSINE?
  • 4. TRANSLATIONThe cell uses information from the mRNA to produce proteins at the ribosomes.
  • 5. STEPS:1) Ribosome attaches to an mRNA molecule in the cytoplasm.
  • 6. 2) Transfer RNA (tRNA): brings in the correct amino acid into the ribosome. Anticodon= three bases on tRNA that are complementary to codon on mRNA
  • 7. COLOR: AMINO ACIDS= BLUE, T -RNA ANTICODONS = RED, AND M-RNA CODONS= YELLOW
  • 8. TRANSLATION CONTINUED:3) Ribosome joins the two amino acids and breaks the bond between the amino acid and tRNA.
  • 9. 4) tRNA floats away from the ribosome which allows the ribosome to bind another tRNA.
  • 10. TRANSLATION CONTINUED:#5) Process continues until ribosome reaches the stop signal. mRNA and protein are released from the ribosome.
  • 11. IF THE DNA STRAND IS ATGCATGCAWhat is the mRNA strand?What would be the three amino acids in this protein?
  • 12. Create a Protein!
