Cambrai War

 1. 1. Cambrai War By: Elias Karam and Yazan Khayyat
 2. 2. Who was involved in the battle?

There were only two European powers in this battle.

Germany and England were those two countries.

 3. 3. Where this battle occurred?

The battle of Cambrai

occurred in Cambrai, France.

 4. 4. Why this battle was fought?

The reason why this battle occurred was because the British wanted the Hindenburg line and wanted to test their tanks on the Germans.

 5. 5. Technology/ Tactics used during the battle?

The most advanced and productive technology used during this war were the tanks. Infantry, artilleries, and cavalry divisions were also used in the war.

Britain’s tactics were unstable during the battle since they kept shifting from the victors to the losers. At the beginning Britain won the first attack by using their tanks and heavily armed machinery. Later on, their general underestimated the tanks strength which caused a critical loss for the British.

Later a surprise attack by the British was initiated, but was not a 100% mission success.

Finally, Germany fired multiple counter attacks to regain some of the land they lost during the attack.

 6. 6. Outcomes of the battle

In the end of the battle a stalemate was the outcome of the battle between Britain and Germany.

Britain had gained a portion of the Hindenburg line around Havrincourt, Ribécourt and Flesquières .

Germany had gained a piece of land to the south of the Welsh ridge.

 7. 7. Summary of the major events of the battle

Britain first lost in an attack because of inefficient tanks.

Britain then attacked with modified machinery including artilleries, tanks, and infantry. This caused a major loss for the Germans.

Britain yet again attacked with an inefficient plan causing them to lose many soldiers. Britain planned a surprise attack, but was not a 100% mission success.

Germany then scheduled multiple counter attacks to help them win back their land which they did.

In the end a stalemate was the outcome of the battle both of which countries gained new lands.

 8. 8. Losses during the battle

At the end of the battle Germany lost a total of 50,000 men and 11,000 taken as prisoners.

Britain lost 45,000 men and 9,000 taken as prisoners. Also Britain had 100 tanks destroyed.

 9. 9. Commanders of the Battle

The commander of Britain was Julian Byng.

The commander of Germany was Georg von der Marwitz.
