  • Now imagine if all this would be technology assisted. As soon as patients registration is over at the reception, an automated mail goes to all concerened departments including wards/OT/Catering etc to preempt patients arrival and keep things ready. Extend this to an auto alert of SMS to all concerened doctors/RMO? Imagine a system allowing Nurses to obtain basic biographical information on patients before they arrive to the unit. Imagine thousands of orders/return by paper?. All postings when done in software automatically adjusts central/sub stores accountability, reorders can be placed as appropriate, re order levels can be set depending on usage trends and high risk alerts can be poped up. Biggest advantage of technology is better patient safety. Imagine ICU without monitors and a central station? Many hospitals are now an HDU ( hospital for example) where patients from any bed can be monitored. Blood samples can be quickly transported to vaccu shutes to lab - Pneumatic Tubes Radiology PACS Email for quick communication Transcription 10. Huge effort goes into non performance oriented tasks like interdepartmental coordination : sending patients to OT, coordinating with front office for completion of discharge process, etc. All this can be made easy by using IT. 11. Nursing Documentation: Nursing assessments, clients' care plans, medication, administration records, nursing notes and discharge plans are some of the forms of Nursing documentation that are computerized. Computerized documentation has many advantages. It is typed and therefore legible. The computer can be programmed to identify the data and time of all entries as well as the initials or the name of the person making the entry.
  • A lot of time is spent on non clinical work also, but is very important. Imagine the senior nurse could asses efficacy of nursing team and individuals for better training: How many new orders written on Ward X in a day? How many medications given on Ward X in a week? Nurses bypassing BCMA by using Manual Medication Entry Show me all restraint orders for the past month List patients in the hospital for >24 hours without a VANOD skin assessment The computer can store standard nursing care plans in a format determined by the institution, to be used by Nurses as the basis for developing individualized client care plan. The computer is often programmed to automatically alert for medication to be administered at pre determined times, during the day. A Nurse using a printout for a particular client, administers the medication and then charts it on the computer (If the medication is not charted and given within a specified time after the scheduled time, the computer prints a reminder that the medication is over due). Computer can perform drug dosage calculation faster and more accurately. Nurses' notes can be entered quickly by choosing statements, appropriate for a particular client from multiple pre programmed choices.
  • USE OF technology IN NURSING EDUCATION. Computer is a useful tool in Education because it allows for an individual a self paced learning. Computed Assisted Instruction (CAI) is a method of teaching that involves interaction between the learner and the computer. The computer takes on the role of a teacher. PPT/Projector assisted teaching. Digital mannequins IV line insertions NURSING RESEARCH: Online Journals and forum and electronic clinical database of hospital facilitate the research process in a number of ways. Computerized literature searches are a particular advantage to the researchers because they save time and can increase the scope of the search and the number of data base that can be searched. The computer can also help researchers collect and analyze data, prepare research reports, and disseminate research findings. Publish papers in international forum and get due recognition
  • I must confess to being a passionate advocate of technology and informatics in health care - and a firm believer in its transformational qualities. However, it is not just the mind-blowing technology that excite me - it is what it does for patients and to improve the working lives of nurses and the healthcare organisation. I was clear then - as I am now - that technology can not replace the human element nor undermine the values that define nursing. On the contrary, I came to believe that informatics and technologies would in fact secure the future of the profession. Most of us will have experienced the dramatic impact of technology on our daily lives. I book my flight/cinema tickets online, even my 8 year old daughter keeps in touch with her grandparent via email. My wife is live on facebook through her phone updates, and before we returned from our recent goa trip, our pictures were online. My daughter the other day asked what it was like in ‘olden days’ without computers. Technology has changed how we buy goods and services, how we work, and most significantly perhaps, how we communicate with people and organisations. Advances in technology are noted in the many medical devices that are used in maintaining life. Many of these devices include the IV controlled monitors, the insulin infusion pumps, patient pain controlled pumps, CADD pumps for total parenteral nutrition, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), monitors for apnea and the many respirator/ventilator systems. Use of Hospital Management Software is now becoming essential in Hospitals as it contributes to faster turnaround times and reducing paperwork. RFID, Barcoders and even use of mobile phones for remote patient monitoring In a study conducted by American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as opposed to 72% using Email daily almost every nurse has access to email and internet. Only 1.3% nurses did not use internet or email. 73% of nurses use internet to access clinical practice/journal access. It would hardly be a time when IT use would not be considered as an EFFORT and will be (actually already is) part of routine. So if some nurses fell left behind and feel they are not techinology savy, I suggest they be.
