  • Welcome to the training module on STM32 Value Line MCUs & Low-cost Discovery Kits
  • This training module will introduce STM32 value line MCUs and low cost Discovery Kit.
  • The STM32F is the foundation of the STM32 family. The STM32F series provides perfectly balanced products for applications that do not require extreme low power. They combine high performance with first-class peripherals and low-power, low-voltage operation. They offer the maximum integration at accessible prices with a simple architecture and easy-to-use tools. With five lines, the STM32F products target a wide range of applications in the industrial, medical and consumer markets. This diagram shows 5 different product lines of STM32 MCUs. All products share the peripherals listed on the left. We will introduce the Value line in the next few pages.
  • The STM32 Value line complements STMicroelectronics’ STM32 Cortex™-M microcontroller product portfolio by offering a low-cost product line that is pin-to-pin compatible with the STM32 portfolio. Based on the ARM Cortex-M3 core running at up to 24 MHz, the STM32 Value line offers excellent cost-performance-peripherals trade-off. It provides all the essential features to make it the perfect choice to develop cost-effective applications traditionally addressed by 16-bit microcontrollers. The STM32 Value line delivers high processing performance capability coupled with up to twelve 16-bit timers, including a motor control timer and a fast 1.2 μs conversion time 12-bit ADC for efficient appliance and industrial-control applications. The built-in H/W CEC (consumer electronic control) interface enables connectivity for controlling HDMI-enabled home entertainment systems, so releasing processor resources.
  • Designed to address cost-sensitive 16-bit applications, the Value line integrates an optimized combination of features. The 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 core running at 24 MHz delivers up to 30 DMIPS with 16-bit code density and outperforms most 16-bit proprietary processor architectures. The seven 16-bit pulse width modulation timers provide an excellent control support for appliance and industrial applications. The Value line’s high level of analog peripherals and system integration, with its fast 12-bit analog-to-digital converter, dual DAC, internal 8 MHz RC oscillator and safe reset system, reduce the overall application system cost.
  • The STM32 Value line combines a 24 MHz ARM® Cortex™-M3 processor core with zero wait state embedded Flash memory access. This line delivers up to 30 DMIPS, outperforming most other 16-bit processors. The Value line operates from a single supply voltage from 2.0 to 3.6 volts over a temperature range of -40 to 105 °C. The large number of 16-bit pulse width modulation timers including a motor-control timer, the rich connectivity including a consumer electronics control peripheral, the fast 12-bit analog-to-digital converter and the dual DAC make the Value line a unique family to meet the needs of the appliance, consumer and industrial segments.
  • As we mentioned before, the STM32 value line embeds hardware support for the Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) protocol included in the HDMI standard, thereby simplifying CEC The Value line integrates a large number of timers and rich communication peripherals that match the requirements of electricity meters. Domestic appliances will benefit from the Value line 3-phase motor-control timer, dual DAC and rich connectivity. The Value line embeds hardware support for the CEC protocol included in the HDMI standard, thereby simplifying CEC implementation in products such as TVs and Blu-ray players. CEC allows up to 10 HDMI devices to discover each other and communicate to manage user-convenience features such as one-touch control of multiple devices via a single remote. Implementing CEC in hardware also frees the processor core to perform extra high-level functions, thereby adding further value to developers’ applications.
  • The STM32 Value line devices offer from 16 Kbytes of embedded Flash to 128 Kbytes with packages from 48 pins to 100 pins that are fully pin-to-pin and software compatible across the microcontroller family.
  • The STM32 value line discovery is cheapest and quickest way to discover the STM32 Value line family. It is available to help designers evaluate the STM32 Value line features and to allow fast application development. There is dedicate web site to introduce the kit with plenty of information, like large number of examples, schematics, forums, etc.
  • The discovery board provides complete development platforms for the STM32 Value line. An ST-LINK is integrated on the board as an embedded in-circuit debugger and programmer for the STM32F100RBT6B MCU. It is designed to be powered by USB or by external power 5V or 3.3V supply. It can supply target application with 5 Volts or 3 Volts. It also has extension header for all QFP64 I/Os for quick connection to prototyping board or easy probing.
  • The software package includes a range of  development toolchains and software examples tailored to the STM32 Value Line DISCOVERY kit. Software tools include the free Atollic TrueSTUDIO® lite version with no limitations on code size or usage time, and versions of  IAR embedded workbench for ARM (EWARM) and Keil MDK-ARM Integrated Development Environments.
