  • Welcome to this module on MCP4725 from Microchip. This module will overview the 12-bit DAC with Non-Volatile memory MCP4725 and discuss the key features and applications of MCP4725. This ‘fastcast’ is 8 pages in length and last just over 5 minutes.
  • The MCP4725 is a 12-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter with integrated EEPROM in a very small package. It operates from a supply voltage of 2.7V to 5.5V and also uses this supply as an external voltage reference. Additionally, its onboard precision output amplifier enables rail-to-rail analog output, so the entire voltage range can be used. The MCP4725 features 6µs of settling time and an I2C™ interface with three modes: standard mode at 100 kilobits per second, fast mode at 400 kilobits per second, and high speed mode at 3.4 megabits per second.
  • Non-volatile EEPROM enables the MCP4725 DAC settings to be recalled at power up, meaning a microcontroller is not required to reprogram it if the output does not need to change. For example, calibration data can be programmed in on this part in the factory, after which the MCP4725’s will always start-up with the programmed output without ever having to communicate with a microcontroller. This provides flexibility for system designers and helps to reduce microcontroller overhead, power consumption, design footprint and cost. Its small six pin sot23 package also reduces design footprint. The MCP4725 is highly accurate. It’s DNL is typically within 0.20 LSB. The power consumption is low, typically consuming 210μA of quiescent current, which drops to only 0.06μA while in shutdown mode.
  • Since the MCP4725 includes non-volatile EEPROM memory, the user can use this device for applications that require the output to return to the previous set-up value on subsequent power-ups. The device small size, low power consumption and non-volatile memory make it ideal for portable applications in consumer, medical, and industrial markets. Products can include handheld instruments, personal media players, and blood-pressure monitors.
  • The ordering information for the MCP4725 12-bit Non-Volatile DAC is shown in this slide. This device is available over an extended temperature range from -40º to 125 º Celsius.
  • The MCP4725 SOT-23-6 Evaluation Board contains the MCP4725 single channel 12-Bit Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) and I 2 C loading resistors. The purpose of this board is Quick evaluation of the MCP4725 features using the PICkit Serial Analyzer and Easy handling of the MCP4725 device in a tiny SOT23-6 package. The user can program the DAC Register or EEPROM using the PICkit Serial Analyzer and measure the MCP4725 device analog output voltage using a voltmeter. The MCP4725 device is available in a small SOT-23-6 package. This board makes it easy to handle the small package device for user’s application evaluations. The user can simply connect the J1 pins on the evaluation board to the user’s test board for a quick evaluation of the MCP4725 device.
