  • On Semiconductors NCP3066 Constant Current Switching Regulator, for LEDs.
  • Welcome to the training module on Constant Current Switching Regulators for LEDs . Here we study the working principles of this device and a few of the Demo boards
  • The NCP3066 is a monolithic switching regulator designed to deliver constant current for powering high brightness LEDs. The device has a very low feedback voltage of 235 mV (nominal) which is used to regulate the average current of the LED string. In addition, the NCP3066 has a wide input voltage up to 40 V to allow it to operate from a 12 V AC or a 12−36 V DC supply, commonly used for lighting applications as well as unregulated supplies such as rechargeable batteries. The NCP3066 switching regulator can be configured in Step−Down (Buck), Step−Up (Boost) and Voltage−Inverting topologies with a minimum number of external components. The ON/OFF pin provides PWM dimming capability or a low power shutdown mode.
  • The NCP3066 operates as a fixed oscillator frequency output voltage ripple gated regulator. In general, this mode of operation is somewhat analogous to a capacitor charge pump and does not require dominant pole loop compensation for converter stability. During initial converter start-up, the feedback comparator senses that the output voltage level is below nominal. This causes the output switch to turn on and off at a frequency and duty cycle controlled by the oscillator, thus pumping up the output filter capacitor.
  • This is Buck Demo Board, with External Switch. The NCP3066 is a monolithic switching regulator designed to deliver constant current for powering high brightness LEDs. The device has a low feedback voltage of 235 mV which is used to regulate the average current of the LED string. The device supports a buck configuration with a wide input voltage range from 3.0V to 40.0V. The NCP3066 is a low cost converter that supports a peek current of 1.5A with a maximum duty cycle of 85.7%. The ON/OFF function allows turning off the device for low consumption mode, or driving the LED brightness using the PWM signal. The NCP3066 can also be used as a controller for peak currents greater than 1.5A when an external device is used. The board Size: 53mm x 50mm x 14mm.
  • This page shows a schematic of a Buck Demo board using NCP3066 device. It has External Switch, which illustrates the NCP3066 being used as a PFET controller.
  • Test Procedure: 1. Connect the test setup as shown Here 2. Apply Vout = 3.2 V in voltage mode at the electronic load (1 HB white LED). 3. Apply the input voltage Vcc = 12. 4. Check that Iout is 1.05 A. 5. Power down Vcc. 6. Power down the load. 7. End of test.
  • This is a Boost Demo Board The NCP3066 is a monolithic switching regulator designed to deliver constant current for powering high brightness LEDs. The device has a very low feedback voltage of 235 mV (nominal) which is used to regulate the average current of the LED string. In addition, the NCP3066 has a wide input voltage up to 40 V to allow it to operate from 12 V AC or 12 V DC supply, commonly used for lighting applications as well as unregulated supplies such as rechargeable batteries. The ON/OFF function allows turn the device to low consumption mode or regulate the brightness of LEDs. The board Size is: 39mm x 32mm x 12mm

  • Test Procedure: 1. Connect the test setup as shown in Figure 1. 2. Apply V out = 16V. in voltage mode at the electronic load (5 HB white LED). 3. Apply an input voltage Vcc = 12V. 4. Check that I out is 350 mA. 5. Power down the Vcc. 6. Power down the load. 7. End of test.
  • This is a SOIC8 Buck Demo Board The NCP3066 is a monolithic switching regulator designed to deliver constant current for powering high brightness LEDs. The device has a low feedback voltage of 235 mV which is used to regulate the average current of the LED string. The device supports a buck configuration with a wide input voltage range from 3.0V to 40.0V. The NCP3066 is a low cost converter that supports a peak current of 1.5A with a maximum duty cycle of 85.7%. The ON/OFF function allows turn the device to low consumption mode, or drive the LED brightness using PWM signal. Size: 42mm x 32mm x 13mm
  • This page shows a schematic of Buck Demo board using the SOIC NCP3066 device
  • Test Procedure: 1. Connect the test setup as shown in Figure 1. 2. Apply V out = 3.2V. (1 HB white LED). 3. Apply an input voltage Vcc = 12V. 4. Check that I out is 150 mA. 5. Power down the Vcc. 6. Power down the load. 7. End of test.
  • This is the SEPIC Demo Board The NCP3066 is a monolithic switching regulator designed to deliver constant current for powering high brightness LEDs. A SEPIC (single-ended primary inductance converter) is distinguished by the fact that its input voltage range can overlap the output voltage at LEDs string. Size: 77mm x 37mm x 15mm, silk-screen diameter: 30 mm
  • This page shows the schematic for the SEPIC architecture for a NCP3066 device. The NCP3066 SEPIC demonstration PCB is configured to output 350 mA when the LED load is set to 7.2 V. Placing one resistor in parallel with R8 by connecting either S4 or S3 will increase the current to 700 mA
