About IWBsAn interactive whiteboard (IWB), is a large interactive display that connects to a computerand projector. A projector projects the computers desktop onto the boards surfacewhere users control the computer using a pen, finger, stylus, or other device. The boardis typically mounted to a wall or floor stand.The interactive whiteboard industry was expected to reach sales of $1 billion worldwideby 2008; one of every seven classrooms in the world will feature an interactivewhiteboard by 2011 according to market research by Futuresource Consulting.In 2004, 26% of British primary classrooms had interactive whiteboards. The BectaHarnessing Technology Schools Survey 2007 indicated that 98% of secondary and100% of primary schools had IWBs. Effective SMART Board Use

There’s a progression involved when learning howto use a SMART board effectively.

Technology tends to illuminate inferior teaching,not hide it.

Use technology to deepen teaching and learning,not to adhere to the status quo.

Avoid being the sage on the stage. Get the kidsusing your interactive whiteboard.

Try to use the board everyday. This will help youget comfortable with the technology.

Be aware that there seems to be frequent updatesfor the Notebook software. Ask your tech to giveyou permissions to update your computer asneeded. Use the link in the Welcome Center tocheck for updates.

SMART Board Basics

Hardware

Board Orientation To access the orientation screen, press the two buttons on the pen tray (directly below the eraser) simultaneously. To complete the orientation process, touch each point at its direct center. The computer will record your screen press upon release. If you want to go back to the previous point, press one of the two buttons. You should do this everyday and consider training your students to handle this task as part of your classroom chores.

The Right-Click Button To access the right mouse button while standing at the SMART Board, press the right click mouse button. A bubble will appear in the lower right hand corner informing you that your next screen press will be a right click (or a control click on a Mac).

The On-Screen Keyboard To input text while standing at the SMART Board, press the on-screen keyboard button. While typing, remember that the SMART Board only accepts one point of contact at a time. The keyboard can be customized by changing the view and the settings.

Digital Ink Layer Writing in applications outside of Notebook launches the digital ink layer. To save notes, you must capture them to notebook software. Demonstrate with the Internet or desktop.

Notebook Software Notebook software acts as an electronic notebook that can be used to edit, save, and distribute information written on the SMART Board. Notebook is your main lesson planning and delivery software.

Collecting and Sharing Content Method 1 • Use the Capture Toolbar. • Open Notebook software • Select View>Screen Capture Tool Bar • Navigate to the content to be captured • Capture Tool bar will remain open. Collecting and Sharing Content Method 2 • Use the Insert Menu • Select Insert>Picture File • Browse to the file’s location and select it. Click Open to the picture to your Notebook file • Capture Tool bar will remain open. Collecting and Sharing Content Method 3 (PCs Only) • Use the Notebook Print Capture feature • Open a file you want to capture into Notebook software • Select File > Print from the application’s main menu. The Print dialog box will appear. Select SMART Notebook Print Capture from your list of available printers • Press Print to capture the page as an image to a Notebook file. Notebook software will launch automatically if it’s not open • Occasionally, the image may appear blurry in your Notebook file. Select View > Zoom > 100% from the Notebook menu to clearly view the captured image in the Notebook work area.SMART Technologies Quick Reference

Collecting and Sharing Content Method 4 • Save in SMART Notebook file format • Select File > Save from the Notebook menu OR • Select File > Save As to save revisions as a new Notebook file. Your original Notebook file will not be changed • The Save As dialog box will appear • Browse to the location where you want to save your Notebook file • Type a name of your file in the File name text field, then click Save • You can now share this file with other Notebook users.SMART Technologies Quick Reference

Collecting and Sharing Content Method 5 • Export your file as other file formats • Select File > Export from the Notebook menu • Choose the file format to export your Notebook file to: HTML, PDF, PowerPoint (PPT) or as a series of images (e.g., JPEG, GIF, etc.) It doesn’t appear that PPT is an option for Mac users. • The Save As dialog box will appear • Browse to the location where you want to save your Notebook file • Type a name of your file in the File name text field, then click Save • You can now share this file with other Notebook users.SMART Technologies Quick Reference

About Content• Remember your finger is the mouse when using IWBs, so utilize interactive web sites.• Also, use applications with your SMART board such as Google Earth, Kid Pix, and Art Rage.• Download SMART Notebook files from the SMART exchange. Leave them as is or adapt them for your own use.• Create your own materials.
