Session Title: Creating and Maximizing Learning Networks in School Communities
Session Description: 21st century students and educators recognize the power of connecting to others and are leveraging technology to expand their learning experiences. Using tools such as blogs, wikis, and chat, people are connecting and conversing globally.
In this session, we will explore personal learning networks and how to strategically develop and encourage these in school communities. School leaders must think about what personalized, networked learning looks like for their colleagues and students from a long range perspective in order to prepare them for our digital age.

I’m very pleased to be here today to discuss with you the notion of becoming what Karen Cator, the director of the U.S Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology, calls a connected teacher. As the official spokesperson for our National Educational Technology Plan, I’ve heard her speak of this concept, and today, I’d like to show you my vision of what that means in terms of the entire school community.
To do this, I think it’s important for you to understand my story and where I’ve come from. My intention is not to be talking incessantly about myself, but to demonstrate that a variety of experiences has brought dimension to my professional life over the course of time.
Also, we’ll talk about the tools and what this all means ultimately for our students.
It’s also important for us to do this in order to model good digital citizenship for our students. Kids also need to learn how to be resourceful and develop their own personal learning networks.
At the School:
1. Social media is important.
2. There is long range planning about 21st century skills in relation to children’s development.
3. They value skills such as collaboration and cooperation.
4. They provide an environment that is conducive to learning.
First, thing to keep in mind is that everyone’s toolbox and work flow will be different. You pick the activities, tools, and resources that fit your style.
