  8. 8. Colorado State University Fort Collins, CO The climbing wall at the Colorado State University Student Recreation Center is a great case study for any university considering a climbing wall facility. With 3,323 square feet of indoor climbing surface, the facility consists of a 40 foot PerformanceRock free standing tower and 55 linear feet of High Performance bouldering. This wall meets the needs of all user groups, from the students to the administration to the facility management. The wall is run by student-employees, and the climbing club is very active on campus. The CSU climbing wall is an excellent example of how design and programming can come together to make a climbing wall a hub of social activity on campus. Online: www.eldowalls.com/csu 8

  11. 11. PRODUCT USED: PERFORMANCEROCK – HIGH PERFORMANCE™ AND REALROCK™ Our PerformanceRock product was the perfect choice for the needs of this facility. Combining our High Performance and REALRock systems, this climbing wall unites the operational goals of the indoor climbing program with the aesthetic desires of the campus administration. In fact, PerformanceRock is becoming so popular with universities that we are thinking about calling it “U Rock!” The climbing wall is the architectural centerpiece of the CSU Student Recreation Center. The highly aesthetic REALRock portion of the tower can be seen through the glass façade of the building’s entrance. Made of glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC), REALRock looks and feels like natural rock. As experienced wall operators know, the key to keeping climbers enthusiastic is creative and ever-changing routes. The remainder of the tower and the entire bouldering area are made of our High Performance system, which allows for a beautiful and functional “blank canvas” for the student routesetters. d “The experience of working with Eldorado was fantastic because they allowed us to come in with a vision of what we wanted the space to be and the activity we wanted to see, and they were able to build in the components that allow us to have a very active wall.” JEFF HUSKEY, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF C AMPUS RECREATION, COLORADO S TATE UNIVERSIT Y 11

  14. 14. True North Climbing Gym Toronto, Canada With over 14,000 square feet of climbing terrain, including the largest fullysuspended artificial stalactite in North America and a huge top-out bouldering area, True North Climbing is a state-ofthe-art rock climbing facility. Built in what used to be an airplane hangar, the gym features ceilings of up to 36 feet, with abundant natural light coming in from windows in the high space. The look and feel of the space uses the building’s original purpose as inspiration. The hangar was the site of de Havilland’s production of Mosquito bombers in the early 1940s. Eldo was inspired by the look of these planes and used that to drive the design of the shapes of the walls, as well as the color scheme. Online: www.eldowalls.com/true-north 14

  16. 16. PRODUCT USED: HIGH PERFORMANCE Known as the “routesetter’s canvas,” our High Performance climbing wall system is the product of choice for state-of-the-art climbing gyms. Experienced climbing wall operators know the key to keeping their climbers enthusiastic is creative and ever-changing routes. High Performance walls are thoughtfully designed to highlight this aspect of operation. They provide a beautiful and functional “blank canvas” that can accommodate features like arches, overhangs, cracks and pinnacles or simply sweeping expanses that showcase your routes. High Performance climbing wall systems are made of a thick, cementitious texture applied over sheets of interlocking OSB, a proven method of climbing wall construction. Supported by a steel framing system, the walls are extremely durable and can withstand a high volume of use. A t-nut density of at least 2 per square foot and planar surfaces allow you to place more and bigger holds, allowing for the ultimate flexibility in route setting. 16 “When Eldo suggested hanging a stalactite from the high ceiling of our space, I got very excited. It’s a very unique and cool feature that adds dramatic visual appeal as you enter the space, while being a perfectly functional climbing surface. Seeing it actually built is amazing.” JOHN GROSS — OWNER, TRUE NORTH CLIMBING

  18. 18. TRUBLUE™ Auto Belay Using a TRUBLUE auto belay in your climbing wall facility increases participation while driving down costs and risk. Auto belays benefit all levels of climbers, from the novice getting a feel for the movement to the elite climber focusing on conditioning and training. The TRUBLUE uses a self-regulating magnetic braking system and is engineered to meet the strictest safety standards of all auto belays. Modular and compact, TRUBLUE auto belays are easy to install, move and maintain. Plus, TRUBLUE accommodates the widest range of climber weights of all auto belay systems. This makes it ideal for climbing walls used by both children and adults. ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY • Reliability with no sacrificial wear parts • Smooth descent with minimal variation in descent rate of a child and an adult SAFETY • Extensive safety testing • No clutch bearing, eliminating a key point of failure present in other auto belay designs FLEXIBILITY • Simple to install and easy to move to accommodate group programming • Accommodates a wide range of climber weights from 22 – 330 lbs (10 to 150 kg) MINIMAL MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS AND COSTS • Webbing-based system will not damage walls and feels natural when climbing • Reduced webbing wear with unique delivery nozzle and field- replaceable webbing kit • Lower maintenance and servicing costs Online: www.autobelay.com 18
  19. 19. IDEAL FOR: Universities/Colleges Family Entertainment Centers Climbing Gyms Fitness Facilities Amusement Parks Schools Resorts Recreation Centers Camps Parks Military WHY USE AN AUTO BELAY? An auto belay is an automatic belay device that eliminates the need for a human belayer. TRUBLUE uses a patented self-regulating braking system, which is enabled by non-contacting magnetic braking technology. The auto belay takes up the slack as a climber ascends and controls the descent when the climber reaches the top or in the event of a fall. Incorporating auto belays into your facility helps you increase revenue while reducing costs and risks. WITH THE TRUBLUE AUTO BELAY YOU WILL: • Increase programming while decreasing staff costs • Attract single climbers • Reduce barriers to entry for new climbers • Provide your members with a unique endurance training tool • Minimize your facility risk All auto belays are not created equal. What you want in an auto belay Our auto belay Other auto belays Self-regulating, non-contacting magnetic system TRU False… other auto belays are based on brake pad or hydraulic systems. Brake pad systems have expensive wearing parts, while hydraulic systems have a potential for messy hydraulic fluid leaks and the need to re-pressurize. Webbing based system TRU False… other auto belays are cable-based systems, which can damage climbing walls if the cable contacts the wall. Low maintenance and servicing costs TRU False… annual cable replacement is much more expensive than TRUBLUE’s field-replaceable webbing delivery nozzle system. Plus, site visit servicing for fixed auto belay systems can well exceed the cost of our annual offsite servicing. Smooth descent TRU False… other auto belays are not self-regulating and the descent rate can vary according to climber weight Longest range for the price TRU False… while you can buy an auto belay with a range longer than TRUBLUE’s 41 feet, expect to pay a substantial premium for that extra range! 19

  30. 30. Pensacola Christian College Pensacola, FL At 60’ high, this REALRock climbing wall installation is both the tallest and the largest in any university environment. Unique in its realism, this was an architecturally driven project where aesthetics were as important as performance. The client’s vision was to create a massive indoor climbing environment indistinguishable from rock formations found in nature. Through a highly collaborative design process, Eldo created a setting that not only surpasses expectations, but overwhelms the senses. To accommodate the customer’s needs, our REALRock™ wall system was used. The scope of terrain dictated that we build a much larger GFRC mold library than was commercially available in the architectural rock industry. By producing the REALRock molds and panels ourselves, we defined the true character of the rock and introduced a new system that functions as well as it looks. The outcome is a product that not only looks like rock found in nature, but will climb as well in 5 years as it does the first day, thanks to a good balance between natural and modular handhold placements. Online: www.eldowalls.com/wall-refurbishing “We resurfaced our thirteen-year-old, heavily used walls with Eldorado Climbing Walls’ new texture. Not only did the texture allow us to restore the look of our walls, it also encapsulates the aging texture and preserves the integrity of the walls. The new texture has a great feel and friction our members are raving about. The process was easy, and we now know we will get at least another thirteen years from these walls.” KEVIN BAINS, OPERATIONS MANAGER AT THE BOULDER ROCK CLUB After 51
