Scary prospects there...I paid particular attention to the email at the end. Cash is definitely king right now and there's a lot of opportunity for those businesses that got the VC before the crisis hit. Smart acquisitions will separate the wolves from the sheep.

On slide #5 you forgot to mention the banking system first began lobbying congress and the senate to reduce regulation.... (root cause) and the big banks convinced government they could self-regulate themselves. First - came regulation (Clinton Admin) allowing credit default swaps (lead by Lehman Bros), then the Bush (yea, ol 'W') Admin. deregulated utility companies - does Enron mean anything? - and more dereulation for banks. As a result, banks went 'hog wild' with issuing anything they could to borrowers.... cars, credit cards and homes.... It just so happens to be that HOMES consist of the greatest value, opportunity, and leverage for the banks.

And now we're stuck... thanks to our government giving the banks and others what they wanted.... all for 'favors'.

This is classic VC speak. They are normally always lucky in good times and are frequently deluded into thinking they are smarter than the average person. I have dealt frequently with many VC's and the only thing I walk away with is that they all suffer from pattern recognition syndrome like birds on a wire. The other noticeable flaw that they suffer from is in an uncanny ability to invest in bad ideas that will have a 'once lucky' team at the helm. I have seen them recently sacrifice 23 million in invested capital to save 1 million on a deal that was 5 months away from revenue. In times like this they really need to turn to outside counsel. They are woefully inept at taking risk as well and as such by hoarding money create a self reinforcing negative cycle. No new companies incubated, too few B stage companies, many VC's chasing too few B stage companies and many VC's killing off C stage companies. The venture model is broken. I believe it always was.

It seems Sequoia Capital are panicking.

The message I take away from this presentation (sent to their 'portfolio'), is this: they believe that they have invested in badly run startups, who had no forethought, business plan, revenue stream or ability to read the news.

Hmm.. maybe they should go back to VC kindergarten, or use crayons in their next presentation. I did like the third slide though - was that Sequoia Capital's CFO...?

Best example of self fulfilling prophecy - very professionally executed. Scary. No matter what they say, if enough people in places like this say it, it will become the reality. Told you so? I did, I did! What I hope will happen is that 2-way communication now in place (web 2.0 at all) will shorten the time it will take to see trough it. My estimate: 2Y downturn with markets picking up in 1Y, looking forward as they always do...
