Remember Polaroid pictures?
Instagram’s inspiration came from making and sharing your
life as instant and magical as those polaroid pictures.
Instagram is instant and is mobile – so you can share and
take any photos of anything anywhere – immediately
connecting you to friends (both in real life and online!).
Instagram for business is ‘Take them with you.’ Show them
what is happening in your life, your work, your world.

© Social Status 2014
Step 1
• Download the Instagram app. Go to the
app store on your device, click on the
search button, and type in "Instagram".
Scroll until you find the app, select it, and
click ‘Install’.
• If you download the app from iTunes you
will have to sync it to your iOS device
before you are able to use it
© Social Status 2014
Step 2
• Launch the Instagram app. Tap the
Instagram icon (a small camera with
rainbow stripes) from your device’s
(smartphone/pad) home screen (to open).
© Social Status 2014
Step 3
• Create an account:
Click the “Sign up”
button at the bottom of
your screen and enter
your email, username,
password, phone
number (optional), and
upload a photo
(optional) to create your
account. You can
choose to add a bit of
personal information in
the “about” section as
well, including a
website.
© Social Status 2014
• You can choose to make your Instagram
profile and photos private by clicking on
"Edit Your Profile", located beside your
profile photo.
• Tap the OFF button to turn it ON, which is
located beside the "Photos Are Private".
• On other devices -

© Social Status 2014
Step 4 and 5
• Follow friends. You can now optionally choose to import
contacts and find friends from your contact list, Facebook
account, Twitter account, or simply search for names and
usernames.
• Following people allows you to see their posts (pictures) in
your newsfeed, and you can follow anyone including
people you don’t know personally if you choose.
• Click “Next” when you are finished. You will be able to add
friends/people at any time from within your account, even
after you create your account.
• You can choose to follow suggested Instagram users by
clicking the “Follow” button next to their name.
• Click “Done” to complete the process and continue directly
to your account.
© Social Status 2014
Step 6
• Scroll through your feed. From within
the “Feed” tab you can scroll through
posts by all of the users you are following
by. To get to the Feed tab, tap on the icon
that looks like a house on the very left
© Social Status 2014
Step 7
Look at the popular
tab:
From within the
“Popular” tab you can
see photos uploaded by
other users that are
getting attention from
the Instagram
community. These are
typically the Instagram
photos with the most
‘likes’.
Click on the star icon. To
search for users and
hashtags, go to the
popular tab and type into
the search bar at the top © Social Status 2014
Step 8
• Add your photos to Instagram:
By Clicking the camera-shaped tab
“Share” will allow you to snap
photos or select photos from your
device’s photo albums.
• Take a new photo for Instagram.
If you don’t have the photo you
want to post in your photo albums,
you can take a new photo and
upload it directly to Instagram.
• You can also share your photo
outside of Instagram. Click any of
the social networks underneath
“Sharing” that you want to post
your photo on. Enter the username
and password associated with your
account to link it with your
Instagram account.
• If you don’t want to share your
photo anywhere except on
Instagram, simply skip this step. © Social Status 2014
Taking Instagram Photos
• Tap at the bottom of the app to start taking and
sharing your photos! Once you've taken a photo or
selected one from your phone (from your camera
roll/library – pictures you have already taken or
saved in your smartphone)
• You can make videos using the same options as
above
• You can share photos privately by using Instagram
direct (which acts a private message to selected
people only)

Step 9
• Edit your photo. Instagram has
minimal editing abilities, but it does give
you some.
• Here are the options and a help feature
on how to use each of the tool options -
https://help.instagram.com/7020789531
84400
•
• You can choose to rotate your photo,
brighten or contrast your photo, tilt/shift
your photo, create a blurring effect, crop
a photo, add a filter, by selecting each of
the corresponding icons on the tools
button/s.
• Here’s an explanation of each feature -
https://help.instagram.com/1424679781

• If you decide you don’t like the edits
you’ve done, simply click the icon again
to revert the edit.
© Social Status 2014
Step 10
• Apply a filter to your photo.
Instagram provides multiple filters
that you can use to edit your
photos. Click on the intertwined
squares at the bottom left to
choose a picture to work with, then
select a filter from the choices that
appear.
• You can only select a single filter,
and to test them you simply tap
each filter icon and your image will
be altered.
• If you decide you don’t want any
filters, the tile on the far left will
revert your image back to the
‘normal’ settings.
• Click ”Next” when you are finished.
© Social Status 2014
Step 11
• Add information to your image:
Enter a brief description of your photo
in the “What?” text input field.
• You don’t have to include anything,
but are only able to add a description
before you post the photo. Add
hashtags here to provide a
searchable way for others to find your
photo with.
• You can also optionally select the
“Where?” tab to add location info to
your photo. (My advice for security
reasons is to turn location settings off
UNLESS you are using Instagram to
promote a bricks and mortar store or
live event or if you are comfortable
with people knowing your location)
(Image from - How to Tag Your Way to More Likes & Follows on Instagram)
© Social Status 2014
Step 12
• Click “Done” to complete the process
and post your photo. Your photo will
appear in your “Feed” and also the feed of
other Instagram users who are following
you.
• You can choose to post the picture to any
of the social networks you select such as
Facebook, or Twitter
© Social Status 2014
Step 13
• Like and comment other people’s photos.
Whether you are scrolling through your news
feed or viewing images under the popular
tab, you can show your interest by liking or
commenting on them.
• To like a photo, you can either press the
heart shaped button just under the photo, or
you can double tap the image.
• To comment on a photo, click the small
comment-bubble icon and type your
comment when the keyboard appears
© Social Status 2014
Step 14
• View your news and updates:
• Whenever someone likes one of your photos,
comments on one of your photos, follows you, or
tags you in a photo, you will be notified under your
‘News’ tab. This is the small comment-box icon
with a heart in the centre, the third tab over.
• If someone actively likes, comments, or follows
you while you are on Instagram, a small orange
heart, comment bubble, or profile shape will
appear just above your ‘news’ tab. (known as a
notification)

Why has Instagram become so
interesting?
People love pictures!
And people love to share or tell stories.
As Instagram is global, we actually have a lot in common. We eat food,
we work, we travel, we have pets, we watch TV and movies, we are
learning, and seeing, and doing, on a constant basis …
So depending on your personality, your stories, and your interests
people are sharing, connecting, and learning through photographs.
Please note you can set your profile to private (and accept followers) and
you do NOT have to share anything private or personal.
Some people love learning from each other and have joined groups
making connections world wide with other people with similar
audiences.
And some people (like me!) have learnt to improve (slightly!) their
photography skills – there are a lot of professional photographers
using Instagram as well as brands, business owners, companies, and
people (just like you and me!)

Please note that Instagram has just
updated to version 6 so there has
been plenty of changes to filters

Tips for Beginners
• Be consistent: It's fine to take several photos and upload them
to Instagram on the same day. However, if you don't use
Instagram for a week try not to suddenly spam your followers with
14 uploads in a matter of six minutes. On average people post 1-
5 times a day (depending)
• Be genuine: Make sure that all the photos are yours and that
they are original – if you are using someone else’s photo – please
credit the person by using a regram/repost app – there are plenty
of apps to choose from to do this
• Try to limit to 1-3 hashtags per image and make sure that the
hashtags are relevant e.g. a photo of a book you are reading
could be #book #booksofInstagram #Imreading - please do not
use hashtags that have no relevance to the picture in question
• Refrain from asking people to follow you or commenting on other
people’s pictures asking them to follow you back or like your
photos – this is considered as spamming.
© Social Status 2014
More tips for beginners
• Be social: Only like and comment on people’s photos if you actually
do like them and only if you have a question or have something nice
to say. Instagram is a visual social media network – who you decide
to connect with and why is up to you!
• Be safe - Please take caution and be aware of the dangers of using
Instagram or any other social media network. If your account is
public remember that everyone can see the information and photos
you post. If you are not comfortable with people seeing certain
photos – choose not to share it/them at all or set your profile to
private.
• Understand that each person uses Instagram differently: There
is really no right or wrong way to use Instagram – some
photographers share their images, moms share photos of their
children, brands share their content, etc. You do not have to like,
comment on, or even answer every single person’s query. How you
use Instagram is completely up to you.
• If you need to delete or remove comments go to
www.instagram.com sign in using your username and password and
then select to delete any comments underneath your photos.

Other ways to make use of
Instagram
• Check http://iconosquare.com/ for analytics (stats regarding your
photos), notifications, and to search for people or hashtags, and look
for other photos on your computer.
• Use web search to find Instagram photos
• Share photos elsewhere (email, Facebook, Twitter, via messages,
Tumblr, Flickr, and miki)
• You can choose to print Instagram photos, make cookies, or create
prints or photos- through other companies – there are a lot of great
options for businesses or brands – just search for print options on
Google!
• Make use of the search feature to find things you like and are
interested in – that way you can find the right people to follow on
your Instagram account
• There are a whole lot of tools and platforms to help you use
Instagram (as an individual) – just search Google for the latest
Instagram tips and tools.
• There are a whole lot of apps (mostly free) which you can use to
change, edit, add to, watermark, or change the design of your
photos before putting them on Instagram. © Social Status 2014
Instagram Privacy and Safety
• Please adhere to the terms and conditions
on this site
• If you need to block, or report a person, or
need to check the community guidelines –
here are a whole lot of tips and resources
to keep you (or your children/grand
children) safe while using Instagram

Instagram for business is ‘Take them with you.’ Show them what is happening in your life, your work, your world. © Social Status 2014

  • 7. Step 2 • Launch the Instagram app. Tap the Instagram icon (a small camera with rainbow stripes) from your device’s (smartphone/pad) home screen (to open). © Social Status 2014
  • 8. Step 3 • Create an account: Click the “Sign up” button at the bottom of your screen and enter your email, username, password, phone number (optional), and upload a photo (optional) to create your account. You can choose to add a bit of personal information in the “about” section as well, including a website. © Social Status 2014
  • 9. • You can choose to make your Instagram profile and photos private by clicking on "Edit Your Profile", located beside your profile photo. • Tap the OFF button to turn it ON, which is located beside the "Photos Are Private". • On other devices - http://www.twelveskip.com/tutorials/instagram /220/how-to-make-your-instagram-profile-private © Social Status 2014
  • 10. Step 4 and 5 • Follow friends. You can now optionally choose to import contacts and find friends from your contact list, Facebook account, Twitter account, or simply search for names and usernames. • Following people allows you to see their posts (pictures) in your newsfeed, and you can follow anyone including people you don’t know personally if you choose. • Click “Next” when you are finished. You will be able to add friends/people at any time from within your account, even after you create your account. • You can choose to follow suggested Instagram users by clicking the “Follow” button next to their name. • Click “Done” to complete the process and continue directly to your account. © Social Status 2014
  • 11. Step 6 • Scroll through your feed. From within the “Feed” tab you can scroll through posts by all of the users you are following by. To get to the Feed tab, tap on the icon that looks like a house on the very left © Social Status 2014
  • 12. Step 7 Look at the popular tab: From within the “Popular” tab you can see photos uploaded by other users that are getting attention from the Instagram community. These are typically the Instagram photos with the most ‘likes’. Click on the star icon. To search for users and hashtags, go to the popular tab and type into the search bar at the top © Social Status 2014
  • 13. Step 8 • Add your photos to Instagram: By Clicking the camera-shaped tab “Share” will allow you to snap photos or select photos from your device’s photo albums. • Take a new photo for Instagram. If you don’t have the photo you want to post in your photo albums, you can take a new photo and upload it directly to Instagram. • You can also share your photo outside of Instagram. Click any of the social networks underneath “Sharing” that you want to post your photo on. Enter the username and password associated with your account to link it with your Instagram account. • If you don’t want to share your photo anywhere except on Instagram, simply skip this step. © Social Status 2014
  • 14. Taking Instagram Photos • Tap at the bottom of the app to start taking and sharing your photos! Once you've taken a photo or selected one from your phone (from your camera roll/library – pictures you have already taken or saved in your smartphone) • You can make videos using the same options as above • You can share photos privately by using Instagram direct (which acts a private message to selected people only) http://blog.instagram.com/post/69789416311/insta gram-direct © Social Status 2014

  • 17. Here is information about using flash - https://help.instagram.com/442418472487929 , using the library (to access your own photos on your mobile phone) - https://help.instagram.com/365080703569355/ - or various tools and options to edit your photos: http://blog.instagram.com/post/87703266532/n ew-creative-tools © Social Status 2014
  • 18. Step 9 • Edit your photo. Instagram has minimal editing abilities, but it does give you some. • Here are the options and a help feature on how to use each of the tool options - https://help.instagram.com/7020789531 84400 • • You can choose to rotate your photo, brighten or contrast your photo, tilt/shift your photo, create a blurring effect, crop a photo, add a filter, by selecting each of the corresponding icons on the tools button/s. • Here’s an explanation of each feature - https://help.instagram.com/1424679781 131460 • If you decide you don’t like the edits you’ve done, simply click the icon again to revert the edit. © Social Status 2014
  • 19. Step 10 • Apply a filter to your photo. Instagram provides multiple filters that you can use to edit your photos. Click on the intertwined squares at the bottom left to choose a picture to work with, then select a filter from the choices that appear. • You can only select a single filter, and to test them you simply tap each filter icon and your image will be altered. • If you decide you don’t want any filters, the tile on the far left will revert your image back to the ‘normal’ settings. • Click ”Next” when you are finished. © Social Status 2014
  • 20. Step 11 • Add information to your image: Enter a brief description of your photo in the “What?” text input field. • You don’t have to include anything, but are only able to add a description before you post the photo. Add hashtags here to provide a searchable way for others to find your photo with. • You can also optionally select the “Where?” tab to add location info to your photo. (My advice for security reasons is to turn location settings off UNLESS you are using Instagram to promote a bricks and mortar store or live event or if you are comfortable with people knowing your location) (Image from - How to Tag Your Way to More Likes & Follows on Instagram) © Social Status 2014
  • 21. Step 12 • Click “Done” to complete the process and post your photo. Your photo will appear in your “Feed” and also the feed of other Instagram users who are following you. • You can choose to post the picture to any of the social networks you select such as Facebook, or Twitter © Social Status 2014
  • 22. Step 13 • Like and comment other people’s photos. Whether you are scrolling through your news feed or viewing images under the popular tab, you can show your interest by liking or commenting on them. • To like a photo, you can either press the heart shaped button just under the photo, or you can double tap the image. • To comment on a photo, click the small comment-bubble icon and type your comment when the keyboard appears © Social Status 2014
  • 23. Step 14 • View your news and updates: • Whenever someone likes one of your photos, comments on one of your photos, follows you, or tags you in a photo, you will be notified under your ‘News’ tab. This is the small comment-box icon with a heart in the centre, the third tab over. • If someone actively likes, comments, or follows you while you are on Instagram, a small orange heart, comment bubble, or profile shape will appear just above your ‘news’ tab. (known as a notification) © Social Status 2014

  • 25. Why has Instagram become so interesting? People love pictures! And people love to share or tell stories. As Instagram is global, we actually have a lot in common. We eat food, we work, we travel, we have pets, we watch TV and movies, we are learning, and seeing, and doing, on a constant basis … So depending on your personality, your stories, and your interests people are sharing, connecting, and learning through photographs. Please note you can set your profile to private (and accept followers) and you do NOT have to share anything private or personal. Some people love learning from each other and have joined groups making connections world wide with other people with similar audiences. And some people (like me!) have learnt to improve (slightly!) their photography skills – there are a lot of professional photographers using Instagram as well as brands, business owners, companies, and people (just like you and me!) © Social Status 2014

  • 33. Tips for Beginners • Be consistent: It's fine to take several photos and upload them to Instagram on the same day. However, if you don't use Instagram for a week try not to suddenly spam your followers with 14 uploads in a matter of six minutes. On average people post 1- 5 times a day (depending) • Be genuine: Make sure that all the photos are yours and that they are original – if you are using someone else’s photo – please credit the person by using a regram/repost app – there are plenty of apps to choose from to do this • Try to limit to 1-3 hashtags per image and make sure that the hashtags are relevant e.g. a photo of a book you are reading could be #book #booksofInstagram #Imreading - please do not use hashtags that have no relevance to the picture in question • Refrain from asking people to follow you or commenting on other people’s pictures asking them to follow you back or like your photos – this is considered as spamming. © Social Status 2014
  • 34. More tips for beginners • Be social: Only like and comment on people’s photos if you actually do like them and only if you have a question or have something nice to say. Instagram is a visual social media network – who you decide to connect with and why is up to you! • Be safe - Please take caution and be aware of the dangers of using Instagram or any other social media network. If your account is public remember that everyone can see the information and photos you post. If you are not comfortable with people seeing certain photos – choose not to share it/them at all or set your profile to private. • Understand that each person uses Instagram differently: There is really no right or wrong way to use Instagram – some photographers share their images, moms share photos of their children, brands share their content, etc. You do not have to like, comment on, or even answer every single person’s query. How you use Instagram is completely up to you. • If you need to delete or remove comments go to www.instagram.com sign in using your username and password and then select to delete any comments underneath your photos. © Social Status 2014
  • 35. Other ways to make use of Instagram • Check http://iconosquare.com/ for analytics (stats regarding your photos), notifications, and to search for people or hashtags, and look for other photos on your computer. • Use web search to find Instagram photos • Share photos elsewhere (email, Facebook, Twitter, via messages, Tumblr, Flickr, and miki) • You can choose to print Instagram photos, make cookies, or create prints or photos- through other companies – there are a lot of great options for businesses or brands – just search for print options on Google! • Make use of the search feature to find things you like and are interested in – that way you can find the right people to follow on your Instagram account • There are a whole lot of tools and platforms to help you use Instagram (as an individual) – just search Google for the latest Instagram tips and tools. • There are a whole lot of apps (mostly free) which you can use to change, edit, add to, watermark, or change the design of your photos before putting them on Instagram. © Social Status 2014
  • 36. Instagram Privacy and Safety • Please adhere to the terms and conditions on this site • If you need to block, or report a person, or need to check the community guidelines – here are a whole lot of tips and resources to keep you (or your children/grand children) safe while using Instagram https://help.instagram.com/ © Social Status 2014
  • 37. Backing up your photos: There is a collection of Instagram backup tools for almost any platform. Pick your solution and start backing up! http://www.makeuseof.c om/tag/polaroids-in-the-wind- have-you-backed-up- your-instagram-account/ © Social Status 2014
