St Joan – The Historical Context 1337 - Edward III of England claims the throne of France. - The Hundred Years’ War begins. 1403 - Charles VII, Dauphin and future King of France,is born. 1412 - Joan of Arc is born in Domrémy. 1415 - King Henry V of England invades France. Wins the Battle of Agincourt. 1420 - Treaty of Troyes - Charles VI of France recognizes Henry V of England as heir to the French throne and Regent of France. The English occupy Paris. 1422 - Deaths of Henry V and Charles VI. - Henry VI (Eng) is proclaimed King of France (north of the Loire). - Charles VII is proclaimed King of France (south of the Loire).
  • 3. Saint Joan – Significant Events1429 - January / February – Joan leaves Domrémy for Vaucouleurs. - February / March – Joan arrives at Chinon. Meets Charles, the Dauphin. - April / May – Joan and her forces recapture Orléans. - July – Joan crowns the Dauphin as King Charles VII of France at Rheims. - September – Joan attacks Paris but fails to recapture it. - December – Joan and her family are ennobled.1430 - May – Joan is captured at Compiègne.1431 - January – Joan arrives at Rouen Castle. - February / March – Public sessions of Joan’s trial takes place. - May - 24th - Joan Recants. 27th - Withdraws her recantation. - 28th- Condemned as a heretic. Handed over for burning. - 30th - Joan is burned at the stake.

St Joan - The Resurrection1436 Charles VII recaptures Paris.1450 First inquiry into Joan’s sentence.1452 Second inquiry into Joan’s trial and sentence.1455 The process en nullité: the verdict is rescinded.1869 The case of Joan’s canonization is placed before the Vatican.1903 The formal proposal for Joan’s canonization is entered.1904 Pope Pius X gives Joan the title of Venerable.1909 Joan is beatified April 11th.1920 Joan is canonized by Pope Benedict XV, May 16th.1923 G B Shaw completes Saint Joan. (Received Nobel in 1925)
