  3. 3. 1 Chapter 8: The Parent NoticeboardResearch shows that children do better in school when parents take an active interest intheir child’s schooling. There are number of ways that parents and schools cancommunicate with each other, rather than relying on the scheduled parent-teacherevenings. Close communications between parents and schools can benefit the studentenormously.Parents of students in all Malaysian schools are automatically allocated a login to the FrogVLE. Although limited to viewing the parent noticeboard and using email there is a lot theschool can do to keep parents fully informed. This section is intended to start your school on the path to fully engaging parents. It ismeant as a general overview of the potential of your VLE in opening communicationchannels to parents.Parent AccessParents must use their own Yes ID and password when logging in to the Frog VLE.These need to be given to them by the Frog Admin. The Parent NoticeboardThe Parent Noticeboard is the first page parents are presented with upon logging into theVLE. It can only be customised by the Frog Admin. By default, the Parent Noticeboardlooks like this:
  4. 4. 2The Frog Admin may add more tabs or sub tab to this page in order to convey necessaryinformation to parents. How these are displayed is up to you. Use the Widgets to changethe look and content of the Parents Noticeboard.Note: Here are just some few examples. No doubt you can think of many more innovativeways of using the Parent Noticeboard according to your school’s needs.Do’s and Don’tsDoUpdate the board regularly so that Parents have a reason to log in.Inform all parents of their login information and explain the Noticeboards’ purpose.Try to include helpful, pertinent information.Try to convey warmth and a sense of partnership with parents.Make sure your Parent Noticeboard looks neat, organized, professional, and visuallyappealing.Don’tLet posted items become outdated or expired.Put up nasty reminders.Post inaccurate information or words spelled incorrectly.Tips for Adding ContentThe default Parent Noticeboard is based around a single page. The Frog Admin can addnew tabs to expand the Noticeboard. Include separate sections of information on avariety of different tabs. Select sections that are most appropriate for parents in yourschool. Start with a few sections and ask parents what they would like to see. Add moreas you learn about parents’ needs, interests, and concerns. This is an example of a typical Parents Noticeboard. In this example we added new tabs such as; Calendar and Activities, Parent Teacher Association, Partnership with Parents, Exams, Notices for Parents and also a School Fees and Book List tab.
  5. 5. 3Adding Calendars and ActivitiesBesides adding new pages we have also created subpages for the School Calendar andco-curricular activities. When parents click on the Calendar & Activities tab, they can view a complete schoolcalendar for the year. They can also download the time table if needed.
  6. 6. 4On the School Calendar tab, Parents can view upcoming meetings or events for theschool.Whilst on the Curricular & Co-curricular sub tab, they can see exams dates or anysocieties and clubs events.
  7. 7. 5Parent Teacher AssociationOn Parent Teacher Association page, parents can find any related issues, events andinformation about the association in your school.
  8. 8. 6Partnership with ParentsThe Partnership with Parents page helps parents to know more about each other as afamily. In here, you can post photos of people who provide your program with valuedsupport and assistance: corporate donors, special visitors or volunteers. If necessary, invite each person to contribute a brief quote about why they support theprogram or how they feel about their experience at the program.Frog Administrators can also add subpages for the Partnership with Parents page. Forexample, you can add a Discussion Forum. The Forum page allows parents to submitcomments, questions or suggestions regarding the school, students or schoolmanagement.
  9. 9. 7Exam InformationThe Exams page informs parents of all exam related information such as examinationtime tables. The Frog Admin can also create subpages for national examination papers, such asUPSR, PMR, SPM, STPM or STAM.
  10. 10. 8Notices for ParentsIn the Notices for Parents page, we have created individual pages for each Year Group.Form teachers are able to notify parents concerning school trips, performing arts, fundraisers or any other events that involves Parents participation.
  11. 11. 9School Fees and Book ListIn the School Fees and Book List page, we have created individual School Fees and BookList pages for each Year Group. Parents are able to obtain information regarding theschool fees from the page.Furthermore, book list for the subsequent school year can be obtain beforehand insteadof rushing to the school at the beginning of the school year and going through theprocess of purchasing the school essentials.
