SOME RULES ABOUT FORMING COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES
One syllable adjectives generally form the comparative by adding -er and the superlative by adding -est , e.g.:
The thinnest Thinner Thin The shortest Shorter Short The cheapest Cheaper Cheap The tallest Taller Tall Superlative Comparative Adjective

SPELLING RULES
Note that if a one syllable adjective ends in a single vowel letter followed by a single consonant letter, the consonant letter is doubled, e.g.: thin -> thinner, big -> biggest.
If an adjective ends in -e, this is removed when adding -er/-est, e.g.: wide -> wider/widest.
If an adjective ends in a consonant followed by -y, -y is replaced by -i when adding -er/-est, e.g.: dry -> drier/driest .

THREE SYLLABLE ADJECTIVES
Adjectives which have three or more syllables always form the comparative and superlative with MORE and THE MOST , e.g .:

IRREGULAR ADJECTIVES The farthest/furthest Farther/further Far The worst Worse Bad The best Better Good Superlative Comparative Adjective

tall The monkey is taller than the crow. The giraffe is the tallest .

fast The frog is faster than the ant. The cat is the fastest .

big The dog is bigger than the mouse. The elephant is the biggest .

heavy The monkey is heavier than the cat. The elephant is the heaviest .

dangerous

dangerous The crow is more dangerous than the butterfly. The snake is the most dangerous .

elegant

elegant The cat is more elegant than the duck. The horse is the most elegant .
