North Cyprus is the northern third of the island of Cyprus which is administered by Turkish Cypriots, but only recognized as a state by Turkey. It was established in 1983 after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 separated the island along ethnic lines into Greek Cypriot south and Turkish Cypriot north. The area is commonly known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which maintains formal and economic relations primarily with Turkey.
