      • Prevents beach from getting eroded by destructive waves.
      • Protects the area behind from the beach from storm surges.
    • Disadvantages of breakwaters
      • Careful planning must be given before building a breakwater because of the inevitable environmental damage.
      • Disrupts natural process of long-shore drift.
      • Effective decreases as tide level rises.
      • Impairs aesthetics.

      • Secondary purpose: protection of anchorages (Portland Harbour, England)
