  • 7.2 Leadership What is a Leader? A leader is a manager of people – one who is able to motivate individuals and groups to accomplish important goals. Leadership is the ability to motivate individuals and groups to accomplish important goals. Intro to Business
  • You may have heard that “Leaders are born and not made” but most leaders report that they did not always have the characteristics for success. Intro to Business
  • And yet, if everyone in this class made a list of which classmates are leaders and which are followers we would find that a handful of you already practice the traits of leadership. Intro to Business
    • Preparing to be a leader.
    • Study leadership
    • Join and participate in organizations and activities – these sometimes provide opportunities to serve as leaders
    • Practice leadership at school and work
    • Observe and imitate the behavior of leaders

  • Self understanding is the ability to recognize how one communicates and works with others individually and in groups. Intro to Business
  • Understanding others – the ability to know each person’s skills, abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Intro to Business
  • Influence – enables a person to affect the actions of others Intro to Business
  • Position influence - the ability to get others to accomplish tasks because of the position the leader holds Intro to Business
  • Reward influence – ability to give and withhold rewards Intro to Business
  • Expert influence – arises when group members recognize that the leader has special expertise an an area. Intro to Business
  • Identity influence – stems from trust and respect members have for the leader. Intro to Business
  • Formal influence – Managers have formal influence because of the position they have been assigned. Others have informal influence. Intro to Business
