  • 2. Before you Begin
    • There are types of search engines used to find webpages on the internet.
    • Some of the major engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN and AltaVista
    • These search engines most times give you a large amount of web hits and webpages that are not exactly what you are looking for.
    • The following slides are to help you use certain search engines to find specific content.
  • 3. Searching Techniques
    • Instead of just entering a word and pressing “search”, you can get better results by using a few methods
    • Boolean operators (AND, OR ,NOT) e.g. “bacteria AND growth”
    • Parenthesis e.g. “(bacteria AND growth) NOT phyla
    • Truncation
      • e.g. “endosp?”
  • 4. Good Search Engines
    • Good search engines for the science of bacteria include: www.sciseek.com , www.scirus.com/ , www.scinet.cc
  • 5. Reliable and Credible Sources
    • Some sources are more reliable than others. Try to stick to educational source like university pages and journals, library pages, etc
  • 6.
    • Beware of uncredited and open authored webpages. The information included may not be suitable or correct.
  • 7. Now you’re READY!
    • Find five credible webpages on a science topic of your choice.
    • Find five dubious webpages on the same topic.
    • Write them down on the worksheet handed out.
