Primary education is compulsoryand is six years in duration dividedinto a four-year primary cycle and atwo-year intermediate cycle.Children generally begin first gradeat seven years of age; however,private schools often operate aseven-year curriculum starting ayear earlier. Students are annuallypromoted from one grade to thenext provided that they meet theachievement standards set for thegrade. Students are rated in everysubject four times during the year.
  4. 4. A cumulative rating system is used asthe basis for promotion. The passgrade is 75 percent. In grades I & II themedium of instruction is generally in thelocal dialect, of which there are morethan 170 nationally, with English andFilipino taught as second languages.From grade III onwards mathematicsand science are taught in English withthe social sciences and humanitiestaught in Filipino.
  5. 5. After satisfactorily completing thesix-year elementary curriculum,students receive a certificate ofgraduation from the elementaryschool. No examination is requiredfor admission to public secondaryschools.
  6. 6. PrimaryDuration: Four years (grades I – IV, ageseven to 11).IntermediateDuration: Two years (grades V – VI, age11 to 13).Curriculum: Core subjects: Languagearts (Filipino, English and local dialect),mathematics, health and science;
  7. 7. Makabayan* subjects: In grades I – IIIstudents study civics and culture, in grades IV– VI students study music, arts and physicaleducation; home economics and livelihood;and social studies. Values education and‘good manners and right conduct’ areintegrated in all learning areas.

Makabayan is described by the ministry as alearning area that serves as a practiceenvironment for holistic learning to develop ahealthy personal and national self-identity.Ideally, it entails the adoption of modes ofintegrative teaching that will enable thestudent to process and synthesize a wide rangeof skills and values (cultural, aesthetic, athletic,vocational, politico-economic, and ethical.
  9. 9. LeavingCertificate: The Certificate ofGraduation is awarded to studentswho complete six years of primaryeducation.
