Through these low-margin businesspractices, we alienate users, perpetuate the practice ofinstitutions charging each other, discourage research andpublications, and undermine our civic mission.It is likely that the Smithsonian will make more money bypromoting “free” resources to a large audience than it canmake charging small amounts for small transactions to asmall audience, and it is a much better fit with the mission.
