BIBLIOGRAPHY He was born in Galicia, in the current Poland, son of Max Wilderand Eugenia Dittler, both Jews. He originally intended to become alawyer, but when he moved to Vienna, he abandoned the careerbecoming a journalist. Later, with the experience gained he workedon a major tabloid in Berlin, where he began his film career as ascreenwriter in 1929. After the rise of Hitler in 1933, he emigratedto France and then to the United States. His mother andgrandparents died in Auschwitz.
