A Growing Population: US Rapid Growth in ELL Demand Nationwide enrollments of English-language learners increased by 57 percent from 1995 to 2005. Public K-12 schools educated a total of 5.1 million ELL students in the 2005-06 school year. In 20 states, the size of the ELL population has at least doubled over this period, with the greatest percentage increases in Arkansas and South Carolina. However, the numbers of English-language learners declined in nine states. Percentage growth in ELL enrollment 1995-2005 More than 200% (13) 101 to 200% (7) 51 to 100% (11) 0 to 50% (11) Decline (9) Eleutian- Confidential - Not for distribution without written permission from Eleutian Technology

        • Student reaction via qualitative survey was positive, reporting that their self-perceived increase in motivation to study English was statically significant. Qualitative interviews reinforced the survey findings, indicating an increase in motivation to study English, and showed that the students themselves believed that they had experienced increases in their ability and confidence in speaking English. Wu, V. & Marek, M. (2008). Enhancing learner motivation to study English via videoconferencing with a native speaker. In J. Luca & E. Weippl (Eds.), Proceedings of World Conference on Educational Multimedia, Hypermedia and Telecommunications 2008 (pp. 4481-4489). Chesapeake, VA: AACE.
