  • Supporting professional development relies on lots of things: staff to coordinate and advertise courses and opportunities, useful and relevant courses, opportunities to practices, reflect and improve…
    Get general sense of how things are in Manchester.
  • Beltane aim- to build capacity and support professional development in public engagement.
    First thing was to set up a cross-institution working group on training and development. Involved people with expertise in public engagement, people involved in postgraduate training (linked to Roberts Agenda), staff development and leadership development and mid-career academic. Took a little while to settle, but group started to gel.
    Look to see what provision there was already as a starting point. The first thing we found difficult was defining public engagement.
  • Broad sense of public engagement,
    However, people who were involved in staff development rather than public engagement still found it a bit tricky to match the courses they had to this spectrum.
    It seemed as if there were relatively few ‘public engagement’ courses.
  • Break public engagement down into ‘doing’ public engagement and ‘managing’ public engagement projects.
    Made it easier to find courses that weren’t obviously public engagement, but could still be useful.
  • Lots of training providers offered a few courses relevant to public engagement but not a huge number. Because public engagement is such a broad area, it wasn’t feasible for one institution to try and offer a comprehensive programme. However, if the Beacon could ‘scoop up’ all the public engagement courses from each partner university there would be a good overall choice.
    For this to work, each partner needed to open out their courses to staff and students from other universities. – Not easy.
    However, there were pre-exisitng arrangements in place, particularly between Heriot Watt and Edinburgh, and also between Heriot Watt, Napier and Queen Margaret so the training providers were willing to come to an arrangement., We then decided to do a bursary system – 2 places on each course £100 per day, etc
