Part 2 of the series "The Health and Illnesses of a data center". This deals with busway for power distribution to the server racks. Many types of electrical distribution busway systems. There can be many different product limitations due to design and maintenance considerations. The different types systems discussed are: 1. continuous, plug-in busway, 2. sandwich Busway.

Primary differences such as hot swappable (the ability of engaging an electrical device while the system is energized) are available on certain products. The systems such as Starline Track Busway meet the safety and the usability criteria for data centers. Easy to use, Safe, simple to install, and maintenance is not required. The best in all categories.

The day the music stopped, the health and illnesses of a data center, part 2 busway

  1. 1. JPE The Day the Music Stopped The Health and Illnesses of a Data Center, Part 2 Busway
  2. 2. The Day the Music Stopped The Health and the Illnesses of a Data Center, Part 2: Busway vs
  3. 3. JPE It has been said “what can go wrong will go wrong” •Costs and risks of installed busway and installing traditional busway • Space restrictions, access easily blocked • Difficulty adding and removing the plugs • Poor connection•of plugand risks of installing power cables (whips) Costs contact to the conductor surface, positional contact in a live data center of contact blade against flat surface environment • Time for the installation is slower, due to weight, tightening of joints, corrections • What could go wrong? Loose Joints, heat build-up creating fire hazard, workmanship, flaws, missed items during maintenance checks, difficulty of putting plug on and off of the system ,
  4. 4. JPE Common Types of Busway / Busduct Starline Continuous Access Ventilated Touch Contact Air-insulated Segregated / Non-Segregated Sandwiched Cast Resin Isolated Phase
  5. 5. JPE Feeder Bus – wrong choice for Rack power  Sandwich Busway – requires maintenance – bolted joints, plug connection is a positional contact of flat blade against a flat surface. Difficult and time consuming to put plugs on. Many companies require the system to be turned off when putting plugs on for safety purposes.  Cast Resin – much improved conductor insulation but same maintenance and plug connection limitations as Sandwich Busway. Both Sandwitch and Cast Resin products best applications are as feeder systems where power supplied over distance with limited connections.
  6. 6. TRADITIONAL SANDWICHED BUSWAY JPE PLUG-IN BUSWAY Plug-in Openings / Access (every 600mm apart) Maintenance is required on the feeder bus systems. Fire hazard if have loose joints Not Starline Mounting positions easily blocked by anything. A bracket, or any physical obstruction prevents mounting of plug-in devices
  7. 7. JPE TRADITIONAL BUSWAY INSTALLATION Not Starline Sandwiched Busway Plug-in Units (every 600mm apart)
  8. 8. JPE Starline vs Traditional Busway Joint Male – Female Joint Removable Joint Coupler Contact Bridge Starline - Boltless Joint
  9. 9. Not Starline • A lot of hardware in each device Touch Contact System • Easy to change the phase or to Rotate the stab set
  10. 10. Not Starline Touch Contact System
  11. 11. Not Starline Touch Contact System
  12. 12. • Maintenance free connections – Nothing to loosen • Rigid blade of paddle contact is embedded in U-shaped copper in housing when installed on system
  13. 13. Starline Not Starline Touch Contact System Rigid Blade embedded in mating conductor, excellent connection
  14. 14. Not Starline Touch Contact System • Joint assembly materials for another continuous access busway. • Many, many parts and pieces required for assembly of housings • Screws to tighten, loosen and Maintain • Can be difficult installation
  15. 15. Joint Hardware (Not Starline) Touch Contact System
  16. 16. Starline Busway Simply Stab-in JPE • No Screws or bolts on the conductor connections • Nothing to loosen • Best connection on the market • Fast Installation
  17. 17. Mechanical Spring Pressure Connection Principal U-Shaped Copper Conductor throughout busway length Stab on Plug-In Paddle or Male end of busbar • Flexible , Reliable, Modular, Ease of installation and Promotes better operational performance • Creates a maintenance-free connection.
  18. 18. To Be or Not To Be . . . Do decisions create honey or do you get stung?  Improving the Design and Performance of the Data Center  The ability to accelerate the changes without creating errors has huge advantages  Introducing systems that have beneficial performance and eliminate the maintenance difficulties and warranty issues.
  19. 19. Efficiencies can be added to the overall designs – the technology is available to simplify the architecture Overhead mounting– either access slot facing side-ways or access slot facing down. Under Floor – either access slot facing side-ways or access slot facing down.
  20. 20. Solutions  Structured Power. All products have strengths and weaknesses. Of Starline’s many strengths – The most important is the reliability of the Joint construction. Starline has never had a loose joint on this system.  Helps to eliminate Fire Hazards caused by loose wires  Operational Temperatures to 70 deg. C
  21. 21. Starline enables the user to make changes without disturbing power to Server Racks in the same row.
  22. 22. Starline Track Busway and all components are easy to: Install Expand Relocate Reconfigure Sustainable These unique features make Starline Track Busway one of today’s most “Green” electrical products • Flexibility: add/remove circuits in minutes instead of days • LIVE PLUG IN: add/remove circuits without de-energizing load, no changes in a live power panel • Remove under floor cable air dams & reduces bypass airflow by eliminating cable access holes (brushes, grommets' etc) • Eliminates many problems associated with power distribution
  23. 23. StarlineTrack Busway Simplifies the changing of the loads to the racks No abandoned or loose wires
  24. 24. High or low density, Overhead or underfloor mounting arrangements are available for your layout
  25. 25. System Components
  26. 26. Starline enables Plug-ins to be grouped together to meet site requirements
  27. 27. Starline critical power monitoring ModBus, Ethernet or Wireless connectivity End feed unit Monitoring unit Calibration for accuracy within 1% to meet ANSI Revenue Grade Standards Plug-in unit (no display) Plug-in unit (with display)
  28. 28. Starline: Underfloor or Overhead
  29. 29. Summary Advantages of StarLine • Continuous access slot allows high density and maximum flexibility • Maintenance-free joints • Plug and Play Live installation • Flexible–quick change • Customizable (Plugs & Busway) • Applications include IT, Automotive, General Industry, Retail, Ballrooms, etc.
