  3. 3. My Planner 4 • My Planners guide you to engage in the SRL cycle by – Thinking ahead (Plan/Set goals) – Thinking back (Monitor how things went) • Make ‘My Planner’ work for you – Thoughtful and reflective answers! – Should take you 10-15 minutes 3
  4. 4. Learning Styles Do you identify yourself as a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner? What are the similarities and differences between SRL, learning styles & how they relate to effective studying? Watch the video on learning styles AND then discuss the “Critical Thinking About Learning Styles” activity 4

Introduction to Strategy Library – Locate the Strategy Library on the course home page – – – – Strategy Library has strategies for all kinds of tasks and processes Tells you about how, when, and why strategies work Provides examples of strategies It’s yours! Feel free to edit and personalize it What is a Strategy? –A studying tactic or technique –Applied selectively / deliberately –To meet specific task requirements (Phase 1) –To achieve specific goal (Phase 2) You can find the strategy library on the main EDD 101 page 5

Make a Change: Try Out A Mnemonic Strategy • Find Mnemonic Strategies in the Strategy Library – In “Strategies for Simple Information” section – Read the Introduction to Mnemonic Strategies – Read about each strategy (Peg Word, First Letter, Method of Loci) • Try one out to effectively remember some course material – Get out your class material & choose something you need to memorize – Strategically choose the mnemonic strategy you think would work best and try it out now 7
  8. 8. Attention Monitoring  With your partner, discuss:    1. What things captured your attention away from the lecture content? 2. What is one thing you could do to redirect your attention? Afterwards, we will construct a list of distractors and the strategies together on the board 8
