The way enterprises use information is changing. Well beyond the big transactional systems of the past, information appears as unstructured content, as loose data collections, or as volatile conversations, traversing systems, devices, media and physical contexts. Information architecture is considered an essential building block of enterprise architecture initiatives. In practice however, it is stuck with the formalism of data architecture on a technical level, suffers from misalignment with the business goals, and falls short of delivering the answer to the most basic question: how to provide valuable information to the right people, at the right time and in a useful form?

    • Topics (1) Information Architecture and the Enterprise (2) The Enterprise as a Ubiquitous Ecology (3) Heuristics for Pervasive Enterprise Information Architectures
    • (1)InformationArchitecture andthe Enterprise
    • InformationArchitecture? Data… …and its use Modeling Systems Control Applications Quality Databases Integration Processes Consistency Analytics Availability Cloud
    • InformationArchitecture? Information… …and its use Structure Activities Classification Abilities Formats Contexts Presentation Pathways Labels Perceptions Terms Interpretation Signs Meaning Media Decisions
    • Two InformationArchitectureworldviews Organising information as assets for business processes and to support decision-making in the enterprise Designing shared spaces to make information accessible, findable and useful for people and their activities
    • Architectinginformation inthe enterprise isabout structure, and people
    • EIA is StrategicDesign Enterprise Information Architecture is about both sides of the coin. It needs to be approached as a Strategic Design challenge, making information pervasive: Connecting the right information with the right people at the right time, and in a way and format adapted to context.

    • UbiquitousEcologies Emergent systems where old and new media and physical and digital environments are designed and experienced as a seamless whole
    • ANDREA @RESMINI 1 information architectures become ecosystems
    • ANDREA @RESMINI no artifact stands isolated all artifacts are connected in one single user experience
    • ANDREA @RESMINI
    • ANDREA @RESMINI
    • ANDREA @RESMINI many an artifact participates in open ecologies
    • ANDREA @RESMINI
    • ANDREA @RESMINI
    • ANDREA @RESMINI 2 users become intermediaries
    • ANDREA @RESMINI participants in these ecosystems actively produce and re-mediate content and meaning
    • ANDREA @RESMINI
    • ANDREA @RESMINI 3 static becomes dynamic
    • ANDREA @RESMINI ecologies are perpetually unfinished, always changing, always open to further refinement and manipulation
    • ANDREA @RESMINI
    • ANDREA @RESMINI 4 dynamic becomes hybrid
    • ANDREA @RESMINI the boundaries separatingedia, channels and genres get thinner
    • ANDREA @RESMINI
    • ANDREA @RESMINI 5 horizontal prevails over vertical
    • ANDREA @RESMINI intermediaries push for spontaneity, ephemeral structures of meaning and constant change
    • ANDREA @RESMINI
    • ANDREA @RESMINI 6 products become experiences
    • ANDREA @RESMINI focus shifts from how to design single items to how to design experiences spanning multiple steps
    • ANDREA @RESMINI
    • ANDREA @RESMINI 7 experiences become cross-channel experiences
    • ANDREA @RESMINI experiences bridge multiple connected media, devices and environments into seamless ubiquitous ecologies
