  • 1. Geomorphological Landforms
  • 2. Geography = People + Environment
  • 3. "Geography is the study of The Earth as the home of people" Yi-Fu Tuan 1991 Human behaviour Human impact on the environment Sustainable development and use of resources Interdependence Scale
  • 4. BUT…………..
    • We must not forget the Earth is 4,600,000,000 years old!!!!!!!
    • Humans (homo sapiens) have only been on the Earth for 100,000 years.
    • We only have 10,000 years of recorded history
    • It is 2007
  • 5. For the last 3.7 billion years since the Earth’s crust formed Geomorphological processes have been shaping the Earth.
  • 6. The Rock Cycle
  • 7. http://www.open2.net/geologytoolkit/geologyhome.html
  • 8. Geomorphological Processes Tectonic movement – Tectonic plates moving Weathering – Breaking down, decomposition of rocks from contact with atmosphere Erosion – Rocks and soils being broken down, disintegrated and removed Transportation – Rocks and soils being moved Deposition – Rocks and soils being dropped down
  • 9. Geomorphological processes need agents to actually do the work…
  • 10. Gravity
  • 11. Water - Rivers
  • 12. Water - Sea
  • 13. Wind
  • 14. Ice - Glaciers
  • 15. Now its your turn….
    • Explain how your landform was formed.
    • Which geomorphological processes?
    • Which agent?
  • 16. Rock Pedestal
  • 17. Erratic
  • 18. Spit
  • 19. Oxbow lake
  • 20. Stack
  • 21. Fold - Unconformity
  • 22. Transportation Process
    • The debris produced by weathering and the sediment removed by EROSION is transported by these agents.
    • Gravity – Avalanche, landslide, soil creep
    • Wind – Sandstorm, suspension, saltation
    • Rivers – Traction, saltation, suspension, solution
    • Sea – Longshore Drift
    • Glacier – Moraine, ice flow, rotational flow
