Unit 33: Stop Motion Animation Production
  • 3. Learning Outcomes By the end of this unit you should:  Understand the techniques and development of stop motion animation  Be able to devise a stop motion animation with soundtrack  Be able to produce a stop motion animation with soundtrack  Be able to evaluate audience responses to own stop motion animation work
  • 4. 1. Understand the techniques and development of stop motion animation Techniques:  Persistence of vision  Stop-frame  Frame rates Development:  Pioneers  Developers  Contemporary work  Genres and forms
  • 5. Assessment and Grading Criteria for Assignment 1 P1 Describe the techniques and development of stop motion animation with some appropriate use of subject terminology M1 Explain the techniques and development of stop motion animation with reference to detailed illustrative examples and with generally correct use of subject terminology D1 Comprehensively explain the techniques and development of stop motion animation with elucidated examples and consistently using subject terminology correctly
  • 6. Stop motion in the media The importance of animation has grown enormously in recent years. Task: make a list of different areas of the media where animation is used.
  • 7. Animation in recent years Your list should reflect how animation is now shown through the internet and mobile phones. It is used in music videos and advertising as well as on television and in films. Stop motion animation is used in a wide range of programmes aimed at children as well.
  • 8. Examples  Advertising: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nP0cSnJDYWE&safe=active  Music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b00eOKE__pI&safe=active http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_HXUhShhmY&safe=active  Television: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxFQpo66Qu0&safe=active  Film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyaGIaJsmTg&safe=active Task: Find your own examples for each one explain: 1. Who is the target audience? 2. How does it appeal to the target audience?
  • 9. Research project This task will form part of your 1st assessed coursework assignment for this unit: 1. Understand the techniques and development of stop motion animation. You need to find out about the following pioneers:  Joseph Plateau (phenakitoscope)  William Horner (Zoetrope)  Emile Muybridge  Edison (Kinetoscope)  Lumiere brothers
  • 10. Instructions Create a power point presentation entitled: Pioneers of Stop Motion Animation Dedicate a slide to each of the pioneers on the list and for each one find out as much as you can about them using the following questions as a guide: 1. Who are they? 2. What are they famous for? 3. What equipment did they invent/develop/use? 4. What were the pros and cons of their methods? Add relevant images to illustrate your presentation.
  • 11. Setting Up a Blog  All of the work that you do for this unit will be published in an online blog  To set up your blog you need to use your school email address and I will provide you with a password. You cannot use your own personal emails or have private passwords as I need to be able to access the blogs and have the information saved in case you lose or forget it  I will also provide you with a username and blog title
  • 12. Blog posts  Firstly, post the examples you found of stop motion in different media  Then, upload your Pioneers power point presentation onto Slideshare and link it to your blog. These will form the first 2 parts of your first assessed assignment. There are 3 more parts…and 3 more power points
  • 13. Techniques You have to show that you understand the techniques of stop motion animation You need to research the following techniques:  Persistence of vision  Stop-frame  Frame rates 1. Explain what they are and how they are used 2. Add examples of them 3. Add relevant illustrations/images If you find any other techniques, add these to your presentation as well.
  • 14. Developers Research key figures in the development of stop motion animation You must research the following people:  Willis O’Brien  Ray Harryhausen  Jan Svankmajer But you can add some more of your own too.
  • 15. Contemporary work Research and write about key figures in contemporary stop motion work You must do the following:  The Brothers Quay  Tim Burton  Aardman Animations  But again, you can add some of your own too.
  • 16. Note about presenting work I have suggested that you should do these as power point presentations, however, it is your blog and if you would prefer to present them in a different way, for example as separate blog posts with screen grabs, images and links, that is absolutely fine. You will be marked on the quality of research that you do and the depth of understanding that you show about the techniques, and development of stop motion from it’s origins to the present day.
