  • Worth highlighting that I am only talking about e here. This market is very well established. It really started back in 1971 with Project Gutenberg. We progressed through the rise and fall of CDRoms in the 80’s and 90’s, and since the mid 90’s, online databases have been going from strength to strength. eBooks started to raise their profile in the mid 90’s with some ‘new’ UK universities experiment with free e-books. The biggest eBook aggregator, NetLibrary, was founded in 1997 and was swiftly followed by other aggregators eg EBrary, EBL, MyiLibrary, the ‘specialists’ such as ACLS, Books24x7 etc T&F launched their eBook offerings in 2001 and other publishers followed suit: Wiley, Springer, Elsevier. OUP develops its long experience of online collections 2000s: UK universities begin to adopt ‘e-preferred’ policies. Trend accelerates as the decade grows older. Top 300 firms in the info industry make up 70% of the whole industry revenue and around 50% of that was from e sales in 2007. Those who innovated earlier are more successful. Many of the major academic publishers report that 10 – 15% revenue is from eBook sales alone, with double digit growth year on year. Very competitive & crowded market – there are at least 29 major primary publishers and aggregators competing in the same space. What I really want to highlight here is that eBooks, as well as other forms of online content are just another format. It’s all about getting our content to the people that want to use it, in the way that they want to use it, whenever they want to access it! Publishing is about exploiting all formats and the key role of a publisher is to ensure quality and to reach all possible markets, creating sustainable revenues. E can help us do this. But the good news is that you will be pushing on an open door. People know about eBooks, understand and are engaged and there is budget there to spend.
