Guidelines on Note Taking <ul><li>As you find material that suits your purpose for researching, it is essential that you identify relevant information from irrelevant information. </li></ul><ul><li>Relevant- information that is needed to suit your topic. </li></ul><ul><li>Irrelevant- Information that is not needed for your topic but may appear interesting. </li></ul>

Note Taking <ul><li>The three step process: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Be prepared- Have materials ready, review previous notes, and any readings. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>During- use abbreviations and symbols. Keep sentences short. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>After- rewrite your notes, change abbreviations into words, change symbols into words, and make shortened sentences complete. </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. Note Taking <ul><li>Notes should be easy to read. </li></ul><ul><li>Notes should not take a lot of time. </li></ul><ul><li>DO NOT write information word for word from books or internet databases. </li></ul>

Note Taking-Source Cards <ul><li>Helps you organize your information by source. </li></ul><ul><li>Record your bibliography information on one side and on the other write important and relevant facts about your topic. </li></ul><ul><li>See examples on p. R54 in the Literature Book. </li></ul>

Note Taking <ul><li>Source cards are not the only way to organize information. </li></ul><ul><li>Graphic organizers are a great way to keep information orderly. </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Webs </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Categories </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Etc. </li></ul></ul></ul>
