  • 2. 17As Jesus started on his way, a man ranup to him and fell on his knees before him.“Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I doto inherit eternal life?”18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesusanswered. “No one is good—exceptGod alone. 19 You know thecommandments: ‘You shall not murder,you shall not commit adultery, youshall not steal, you shall not give falsetestimony, you shall not defraud, honoryour father and mother.’
  • 3. 20 “Teacher,” he declared,“all these I have keptsince I was a boy.”21 Jesus looked at him andloved him. “One thingyou lack,” he said. “Go,sell everything youhave and give to thepoor, and you will havetreasure in heaven.Then come, follow me.
  • 4. 22 At this the man’s facefell. He went away sad,because he had greatwealth.23 Jesus looked around andsaid to his disciples,“How hard it is for therich to enter thekingdom of God!”The man only saw a greatteacher in front of him.
  • 5. 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. ButJesus said again, “Children, how hard it is toenter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for acamel to go through the eye of a needle thanfor someone who is rich to enter the kingdomof God.” 26 The disciples were even moreamazed, and said to each other, “Who then canbe saved?”27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man thisis impossible, but not with God; all things arepossible with God.”God makes it possible for us to recognizeJesus.
  • 6. 28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have lefteverything to follow you!”29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “noone who has left home or brothers orsisters or mother or father or childrenor fields for me and the gospel 30 willfail to receive a hundred times as muchin this present age: homes, brothers,sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in theage to come eternal life. 31 But manywho are first will be last and the lastfirst.”
  • 7. 32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesusleading the way, and the disciples were astonished,while those who followed were afraid. Again he took theTwelve aside and told them what was going to happen tohim. 33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said,“and the Son of Man will be delivered over to thechief priests and the teachers of the law. They willcondemn him to death and will hand him over to theGentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, floghim and kill him.
