  • Pertelian® X2040 - Introduction: Letter from Alex Jarzebinski, President of ForeSight Systems LLC The Pertelian X2040 is the first USB LCD portable secondary display designed to shift the flow of information of the Internet. Normally web users go to the Internet using web browsers or specific Internet programs in order to access the information they are looking for. With the Pertelian LCD, users can now command the Internet and other programs like never before, by making it send information to you, placing often needed and highly sought after data at your fingertips. Our stance is simple. Almost every piece of hardware associated with computers has undergone radical changes throughout their evolution. For the last ten years, a focus on specialization with various hardware products such as sound cards, graphics cards, etc, have pushed the development of computers to levels never thought possible. The computer monitor, however, has seen little evolution, and remains the only source of data display to most users. Not any more. Finally, there is a product that helps filter and funnel specific information to a dedicated display, without having to occupy your main computer monitor. Originally designed for PC gamers, the Pertelian LCD’s first debut to the world was known as the GameOptics X1620, a 16 x 2 LCD display, which has its beginnings as a sketch on a napkin drawn by the founders of ForeSight Systems LLC, Vicken Simonian and myself, both students at the University of California, Los Angeles at that time. Since its introduction, many have sent comments stating the wide range of uses such a product has besides gaming. Popularity has grown rapidly as many have come to appreciate the little gadget’s usefulness and simplicity. We knew we struck a cord with the market back in 2005, as our first release of Pertelian started to make headlines in numerous online review sites across several languages. The culmination of an additional 2 years of work, the jump from GameOptics to Pertelian was a tough one, but finally, its release on December 2005 and the subsequent success thereafter served as fuel for the long road we still had ahead. From January till today, Vicken and I, along with the rest of the ForeSight Systems Team have been working nights, weekends, and even holidays to bring our users bug fixes, requested enhancements, and new, innovative features that help make Pertelian what it is today. Since Pertelian’s introduction, the Pertelian software package has seen three prior major Versions. Version 2 saw the introduction of the Sports and RSS Aggregator plug-ins. In Version 3 we showcased our highly popular Worldwide Weather and TeamSpeak Support features. Now we want to help bring Pertelian into the PC accessory forefront by introducing our most spectacular features yet in Version 4. With this new release, we unveil the highly anticipated Pertelian Version 4 which will feature, along with a plethora of bug fixes and enhancements, three of the most ambitious 3 View slide
  • features ever attempted by the ForeSight Systems Team: Pertelian Monitor™ for Ebay, Forum Watcher, and IRC Chat. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community of customers who took a chance on a brand new “computer toy” and have helped us bring you a product that you will enjoy. These folks have been there with us pointing out bugs and even suggesting new features to include in the software package. Many of these suggestions have been taken to heart and have even been implemented in the product you see today. It is this involvement from the community that makes ForeSight Systems special and we will strive to maintain this open and close relationship with our customers. In fact, this year has seen the creation of Pertelian’s Community Download Center. The CDC was created as a central meeting ground for third party developers to submit their Pertelian creations, have them tested by ForeSight, and ultimately placed as available for download to the community at large. Their contributions have added a dimension to Pertelian not possible without their selfless efforts. Please visit the website, www.pertelian.com in order to be part of our growing community and let us bring you something truly unique by sharing your thoughts and ideas. Pertelian isn’t just our job, it’s our passion and we will continue to work and bring you a constant flow of innovative and exciting features. On behalf of ForeSight Systems LLC, thank you. • Specifications and Details: The Pertelian software package is always evolving in order to not only enhance current features but release new and exciting options. In fact, it is likely that by the time this manual makes it to you, some enhancement, new feature, or bug has been addressed and a new version released. At the time of the creation of this manual, the following features are included in the Pertelian software package. • Listen to your own music using most major media player programs. Take advantage of special features like UltraSeek and Song Search, that allows you to scan music tracks like never before and select your songs by artist or song title all while never leaving your game. • - Supported Applications: Instant Messenger: (Version numbers below have successfully been tested and recommended as of 3-5-07) • AOL Instant Messenger 6.0.28.1 • Yahoo! Instant Messenger 8.1.0.239 • GAIM multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client 2.0 Beta 6 Please note that frequent version updates are released for these programs. A continual effort is always underway to update the Pertelian software to be compatible with these new releases. To avoid problems with your Pertelian software, please ensure that you only use the recommended versions of the instant messenger software by following the links on our site. The current recommended version number will always be posted on www.pertelian.com under “Downloads.” Media Players: • Winamp 5.33 • Apple iTunes 7.0.2.16 • Windows Media Player 11 Please note that the frequent version updates are released for these programs. A continual effort is always underway to update the Pertelian software to be compatible with these new releases. To avoid problems with your Pertelian software, please ensure that you use only the listed supported versions of media player programs. 6
  • - Installation: Unlike previous versions of Pertelian, the messy installation process of old has been replaced by nothing more than a couple of clicks to get everything up and running. In order to try to answer all slew of installation questions that always arise, we will try to cover all the bases. NOTE: The Pertelian LCD must be plugged into your USB port before installation. ** NOTE: Before installation, please make sure you are installing the latest version of Pertelian available free for download from www.pertelian.com – Downloads – Files. Every Pertelian release is named along with a date, for example (3-3-2007). It is important that you install the latest version of Pertelian available on our site. New versions often include numerous bug fixes, feature additions, enhancements, and updates. NOTE: Your LCD backlight may flicker during installation. 1) As soon as you plug your Pertelian unit into your USB port, Windows will detect a new hardware and automatically launch the Hardware Wizard that you see below. Windows does this in order to install drivers associated with the device. However, our new one-click installation does it already for you. When you see this screen, click Cancel. 2) Run SetupPertelian to install the Pertelian software and drivers. Simply follow the on screen directions by reading and accepting the Pertelian License Agreement and choosing the path where you would like to install the software. Please note the default path is always C:ProgramFiles Pertelian. Pertelian requires the Microsoft .NET 2.0 infrastructure to operate. Pertelian will also require J# in order to run the Pertelian Monitor of eBay plug-in. Pertelian will make a search to see if you have this version of the Microsoft .NET infrastructure. If your version of .NET is found to be outdated, Pertelian will give you the option to have it automatically download and install .NET 2.0. Pertelian also requires the latest edition of J# (for the Pertelian Monitor for eBay plug-in) and it will run through the same steps it did for .NET in order to assure you have all the necessary infrastructure. 7
  • If you get to this screen, you’re almost there: 3) Follow the screen by screen instructions and the installer will do the rest. After installation, make sure the box labeled “Run Pertelian 4” is checked and the Pertelian user interface will start on its own. 8
  • This is the last step in bringing your Pertelian LCD to life. Once you hit “OK” from the following message, the configuration menu should appear. Take a look at your Pertelian LCD. If you still see the bar across the top of the screen that is because you need to connect to the correct COM PORT so your configuration screen might look like this: From here you can try to connect to the correct com port. IMPORTANT: Depending on what size Pertelian LCD you are using, you might have to adjust the number of rows and columns. If you are using the Pertelian X2040, have it set as you see above: 4 Rows, 20 Columns. Most likely the COM needs to be set to the correct number. By default the application looks for the LCD hardware under COM 3. If COM 3 is already in use, however, the LCD might be assigned another COM. To check which COM port it is operating under, in the Hardware Manager look under “Ports”, and find the "USB Serial Port (COM X)" where X corresponds to the COM port number. In the application configuration under the main screen, just set the COM port to this number and click the "Connect" button next to it. 9
  • The Device Manager shows you where Windows installed the Pertelian LCD. In this case, it’s on COM4 as shown by “USB Serial Port (COM4)”. Go back to your configuration screen and set it to the correct COM PORT and press “Connect”. Looking at the Pertelian LCD should show you the main welcome screen. If connected, your screen should look something like this: Notice how the COM settings have now been grayed out. This means Pertelian is live. 10
  • - Uninstall To remove the Pertelian software from you computer, simply go to “Control Panel” from the “Start” menu and click on “Add or Remove Programs”. On the list, look for “Pertelian” and select it by clicking on it. By highlighting the name, two options should appear on the right, “Change”, and “Remove”. Click “Remove”. A prompt will appear asking if you are sure you want to remove Pertelian, click “Yes”. NOTE: Before installing a new version of Pertelian, make sure you ALWAYS uninstall the previous version as described above in order to assure the best possible installation of Pertelian. Do NOT simply install one version of Pertelian over another. 11
  • - Setting up Media Players for use with Pertelian Simply installing the supported versions of the following media players is required for the Pertelian LCD to display and give you remote access to your media library. If you do encounter a problem with the Pertelian software recognizing your media library, make sure that you have the recommended versions of the media players: • Winamp 2.x and 5.x, • Microsoft Media Player 11.x • Apple iTunes 7 If you have the specified version of the media player as shown above and are still not able to control your music from Pertelian, reinstall the Pertelian software. This will then guarantee that upon installation, the Pertelian installation process will configure your installed media players for use with Pertelian. If you are still encountering problems, please visit the forums at: http://www.pertelian.com to see if your problem has already been addressed. If not, please contact ForeSight Systems. 12
  • - Setting up Instant Messenger Apps for compatibility with games Update In order for Pertelian to communicate to your Instant Message Service without interrupting the current running program, please follow the instructions below on configuring any of the following supported IM’s. There is a continual effort being made to keep up with the constant version updates to the various applications Pertelian supports. In order to keep your Pertelian unit running smoothly, we do not recommend that you install the latest version of an Instant Messenger or Media Player until we have had enough time to test it and adapt it to the Pertelian software. We highly recommend that you use only the Instant Messenger versions we recommend. As newer versions of the various Instant Message platforms are supported, announcements will be posted on our website in the Chat section stating the latest versions of the various chat programs supported. We are in no way involved in the distribution of third party chat software. AOL Instant Messenger Yahoo! • - Setting up for the Email Function Users will only be able to use this feature if the email address they use is POP3 enabled. If your email address is POP3 enabled, the mail server address will have to be included in the email configuration menu of the program by simply filling out the required fields. In the main configuration screen, go to the “Email” tab on the left hand side. There you will see a list of all email addresses configured for use. To add a new email, click, “Add server”. Hotmail and other major free online email service providers only offer POP3 by paying for it as a premium feature; however many ISP’s provide you with an email address that is POP3 compatible. In the Email configuration menu, select “Add Server”. This brings up the following screen: If you have multiple email addresses, Pertelian will display each of these on the LCD using the Email Profile Name to distinguish one from another. Most mail server addresses will either be “mail.xxx.com” or “pop.xxx.com”. If you are using a browser based email service such as Hotmail or Yahoo!, please check with them whether or not you have POP3 available to you or not. If you do, they will provide the mail server address. If you are using an email address provided by your ISP, please contact them for the appropriate mail server address. The Account Name and Password will be the same as the ones you use to normally access your email address. If you do not know your account name and/or your password, please contact your ISP or email service provider. 14
  • Version 4 Enhancement Notice! Alert Section With the release of Pertelian™ Monitor for Ebay, it became apparent that lines 3 and 4 of the Welcome/Music Main Menu will have to serve as an alert section of sorts where this plug-in can communicate directly to the user. For this reason, these two lines of the Main Menu will become the new Alert Section. Additional features are in the works that will send alerts to the user through this new section of the Main Menu, promising that those two lines will become some of the most looked after lines of the Pertelian software package. So far, the only plug-ins that makes use of the new Alert Section are Pertelian Monitor for eBay and Forum Watcher, but we are hoping to change this soon as well as bring current, existing plug-ins to become “Alert System Compatible”. Community Download Center (CDC) Ever since the beginning, the company has known that some of the most important development for products like Pertelian usually come from its community. To that end, the company has made available a variety of API’s and tutorial documentation in order to encourage this type of development. As third party development started to gain momentum, it became apparent that a spot on Pertelian’s website was needed to order to bring third party developed Pertelian plug-ins and stand alone applications to one place and make them available to all Pertelian users. Since the CDC’s creation, the company is proud to report that several amazing, independently created plug-ins and applications have been submitted and are currently available for download and more are on their way. I encourage everyone to check the CDC every now and again and see what our talented community is making available to you. If you are a software developer and are interested in creating your own Pertelian creation, please visit our site www.pertelian.com and download the available reference material found in our Support section and on the CDC. 15

In the following pages, a detailed explanation of every function is given along with a review of its associated hotkeys. In most cases, “Enter” (Default: Control Alt Q) takes you to the next step of a menu or function and “Back” (Default: Control Alt A) takes you one step back of a menu or function. Hitting “Back” enough times will always take you to Music Main/Welcome Screen. 21
  • The Sports and RSS Aggregator functions were new additions to the Pertelian software first introduced in Version 2! The TeamSpeak Support and Worldwide Weather functions were introduced in Version 3! As part of the largest and most impressive release for Pertelian to date, Forum Watcher, IRC Chat, and Pertelian Monitor for eBay (Auction Monitor), have been introduced into the Pertelian software package in Version 4! 22
  • Pertelian Navigation and Feature Lists This section of the manual has been designed to help first time users become familiar with all Pertelian features and how to navigate through the Pertelian menu system. Each section will include a description of the feature, its configuration menu if applicable, and how to move through a feature using the Pertelian hotkeys. First we will start with the Main Menu. Depending on whether you currently have any of the supported media players running (I.E. Windows Media Player, iTunes, or Winamp), your Main Menu will look like this: WELCOME/MUSIC MAIN MENU OR No Media Player Active. Media Player Active. Number after the “I” represents pending IM’s. • - The Welcome/Music Main Feature Introduction: Although no longer a transcendent feature, it seems like there are media controls on everything from mice and keyboards. Not only that, but most major media players already have a system of hotkeys that you can use to manage your music during any application. We wanted to go a step further and really bring media players a whole new life. Intense development by the ForeSight team has brought about the most advanced media control system while keeping true to PC gaming needs ever developed. The result is an extremely intuitive system of commands that allows you to enjoy music libraries thousands of tracks long including your favorite internet radio stations, without ever seeing the media player itself. Along with powerful active and passive song search engines, you and your media player have a new best friend. Configuration: Configuration options for the Welcome Screen and media players are found on the main Pertelian GUI screen labeled “General Settings”. Here, you can change the default welcome message, disable media player support, and configure Ultraseek play times. Disable/Enable Media Player Support. Change the Welcome Screen Set the Ultraseek play message here. time in seconds. 24

UltraSeek is a unique feature of the Pertelian software that allows you to passively and efficiently scan through your music library. Once engaged, UltraSeek will play in the middle of the displayed track for the amount of time specific in the configuration screen. This feature allows you to simply listen for that certain track without having to keep your eye on the LCD. Starting in the middle of the track allows you to immediately know which track is playing without having to wait through long song intros. UltraSeek/Enter (Control Alt Q) – Restarts selected song at its beginning. 25
  • - Email Scan Feature Introduction: This feature is pretty self explanatory. Users are able to check out email headers and authors in real time as emails come in through their Pertelian LCD. Email addresses must be POP3 enabled in order for it to work with Pertelian. As with many Pertelian features, the PC gamer played the role of template for this feature design. Unable to access emails in game was just one of those things gamers had to live with. Friends, family and acquaintances simply had to know when they email a gamer, I could be a while until they receive a response. However, Email Scan was the first feature to really make a name for itself in the non-gaming world. To be able to constantly and passively check out your inbox while playing or working has become a god-send to gamer and home office employee alike. Configuration: Configuring POP3 enabled email addresses is covered is the section labeled Pertelian Menus – Email Screen (page 18) and in Setting up for the email function (page 14) at the beginning of this document. Navigation: EMAIL MAIN This screen displays any and all emails in the selected email account. You can add email accounts on the configuration screen. Back (Control Alt A) – Returns you to Welcome/Music Main Menu Up/Menu Down (Control Alt W/S) – Moves text up and down respectfully. IM (Control Alt 2) – Brings you to IM Main Next Function (Control Alt 3) – Cycles to the next function. Previous Function (Control Alt E) – Cycles to the previous function. 26
  • - Instant Message (IM) Feature Introduction: IM chat is easily one of the most groundbreaking features offered by Pertelian. For the first time ever, gamers and business professionals alike never have to be interrupted by incoming Instant Messages. Users can carry entire IM conversations through a sophisticated keyboard hotkey system through their Pertelian LCD. At first designed as a “gamer only” application, interest in this feature has already been expressed in the business world and beyond. Configuration: Configuring the various supported instant messaging services with Pertelian to be used while running an application (such as a PC game) and adjusting available options are covered in the sections labeled Setting up Instant Messenger Apps for compatibility with games (page 13) and Pertelian Menus – IM Screen (page 19). Navigation: INSTANT MESSAGE (IM) MAIN Instant Message Main displays the screen names of all persons who you are chatting with. The number next to their name represents unread IM’s from that person. Back (Control Alt A) – Returns you to Welcome/Music Main Menu Up/Menu Down (Control Alt W/S) – Move the pointer to a person’s name to be able to select that person to chat with. Enter (Control Alt Q) – Open up the IM Conversation Screen for the person selected. Email (Control Alt 1) – Brings you to Email Main. Next Function (Control Alt 3) – Cycles to the next function. Previous Function (Control Alt E) – Cycles to the previous function. 27

Menu Up/Menu Down (Control Alt W/S) – Moves text up and down respectfully on the top lines. Chat normally and hit return or Enter (Control Alt Q) to send the message. Once you do, you will be sent back to the IM Conversation Screen. 28
  • FUNCTIONS The order in which functions appear can be configured by the user in the configuration screen. At the time of the creation of this manual, there are 13 plug-ins. - Song Search Plug-in Introduction: Activating the Song Search feature allows the user to quickly narrow down a specific title from any number of tracks. Through the Pertelian LCD, you will see two options, search by track title or track number. Searching by track number is pretty self-explanatory, using your Pertelian hotkeys, you put in the number of the track you want to play and it plays it. It’s when one searches by title that really makes Pertelian shine. Once, it’s activated, Pertelian will narrow down the number of tracks you’re looking for as you type in the title. This allows you to save time by not even having to type a whole song title. Just limit your search to a few tracks and select the one you want to run. If you take another second to write out the title name, it’ll just bring one title and another ¼ second later, it’s playing. • - System Statistics Plug-in Introduction: Way back when we introduced the GameOptics, we thought to include a feature to allow users to get up to the second information of their computer. We allowed customers to have read-time access to information such as CPU usage, memory usage, virtual memory allocation and other core, highly pertinent information. Since Pertelian’s release however, our over achieving Director of Software Development decided to go 18 steps beyond and rewrote the System Monitoring Feature. A computer fanatic’s dream, System Monitoring now allows users real-time information on over 84 different facets of one’s computer including such advanced options as: Virtual Byte Peaks, Page Faults/second, and Thread Count to name only three. However, you don’t have to let all that bury you. If you just want basic info like CPU and Memory usage so you can see if that game you’re playing is telling you its time to upgrade your computer, just select what you want Pertelian to tell you. You can select to have Pertelian tell you as much or as little about your system as you desire. Like the entire Pertelian program, almost every aspect of the feature is customizable. Configuration: Use the System Stat configuration screen in order to select what systems resource you want to monitor in real time. There are a dizzying number of items to choose from. First select a system resource category such as Memory, Processor, etc. In the list below, select specific items and click the arrow pointing right to set it up as an item to monitor. Note that the category “Classic” was set up to help users set up the most commonly sought after statistics without having to dig through them in the more advanced fields. • - Stock Ticker Plug-in Introduction: As the first Pertelian pilot run hit the selves, it became quickly apparent that we could not limit Pertelian uses to the PC gaming sector. It isn’t any wonder that giving our customers a customized, real-time stock ticker was decided to be the first non-gaming specific feature offered by Pertelian. This stock ticker isn’t meant for the power player on Wall Street mind you. It’s meant for the average Joe out there that has a portfolio that they like to keep an eye on whenever they have a chance. Although many think this to be a business only feature, keep in mind that the average PC gamer is now 31 years old, and it’s a safe bet a good percentage of them have some sort of stock investment. Not only will this feature serve as a real-time stock ticker but it also allows access to in-depth stock information of any stock you have currently configured on Pertelian at any time by the user. The Stock Ticker feature isn’t meant for users to solely base a million dollar transaction on that information alone. Always check with your broker or online brokerage house before buying/selling shares of stock. Configuration: Simply place the stock ticker symbols that correspond to the stocks that you would like to keep an eye on using Pertelian. Make sure that you separate stocks by simply putting a space between ticker symbols. You can also set how often you want Pertelian to update your stock information. Enter whatever stock ticker symbol you want here. Set how often you want Pertelian to update your stock info. Keep in mind that shorter update intervals will affect computer performance. 34

  • - Worldwide Weather Plug-in Introduction: Although added only as a minor feature, it has quickly gained quite a following. During our development, there were times when the weather feature would be down and our users were more than willing to express their impatience. Users are able to put any United States zip code or any city name worldwide and receive the current condition and a 10 day forecast which includes today’s current temperature and a brief description of the weather such as “Partly Cloudy”. All forecasts include the expected high and low temperature and a brief description of the expected weather. The weather feature has been extensively used by business travelers and the everyday PC user. Configuration: From here, add any US zip code or city name using the Pertelian city search engine and place it in the list in order to view the weather forecast through Pertelian. Displays all selected entries which Pertelian Select between US or will display weather World mode. If US is information. selected, you must add a zip code, if you select World, put a city name in the Search field and click If in World mode, all “Search” to select the right cities with the name one from the list to the selected will appear here, select one and click “add”. • - Network Statistics Plug-in Introduction: You can’t go wrong with a constant, up-to-the-second reading of your current network connection speeds. As soon as you plug your Pertelian in and install the Pertelian program, you instantly have access to a real-time display of your upload and download rate. Being one of the more general features, Network Stats can find a home with any user who is connected to the internet for any number of reasons. Configuration: Network Statistics is not configurable. • - Quick Memo Plug-in Introduction: A simple feature intended to round out the Pertelian software package. Basically, whenever you need to make a quick note for anything, just go to Pertelian, either through the Quick Memo configuration screen or right there on your Pertelian LCD and put that info in. Intended to be a help with the multitude of webpage passwords that we are all supposed to remember, it has turned into the newest “e-notepad”, usable with any program running. Some have used it to jot down names of new friends they find while gaming online as well. Configuration: The Quick Memo configuration screen allows you to add, edit, or remove memos. All this can also be done through the Pertelian LCD with hotkeys as described below. Lists all current memos in Pertelian. Add a new memo and click “Add”. 39

  • - RSS Aggregator Plug-in Introduction: RSS Feeds, or Really Simple Syndication, have as of yet found a good niche to really make a name for itself, that is until Pertelian. RSS feeds allow users to scan a webpage, in particular its articles, without having to open a browser. Websites for which this was developed were news centered websites which receive updates many times a day such as CNN.com. Essentially, RSS feeds give you access to article headings so you can see if there is anything of interest on a website without having to open the browser. For example, let’s say you check out the RSS feed for CNN.com -> Top Stories, you’d see something like this: - Problems In Iraq Persist after Elections - Scientists Say They Are Now Able to Detect Small Rocky Planets - Water Ice Detected on Comet Surface - Gunman Close Gaza’s EU Office Finally, the common PC user can see what new is going on with their favorite website without having to interrupt what they are doing. Through their Pertelian LCD, users can check to see if there are any interesting news happening or check out RSS enabled PC gaming sites and see if that new game was released yet. Configuration: There are two menus when adding RSS feeds to Pertelian. The first simply displays any current RSS feeds configured with Pertelian and presents options to add or remove feeds as shown below. In our example, there are 3 feeds currently configured. Current RSS feeds configured with Pertelian. Add or remove current RSS feeds from the list above. Set how often you want Pertelian to update your RSS feeds. Keep in mind that shorter update intervals will affect computer performance. 41
  • Once you select “Add”, you will be shown another screen with the fields needed to add another RSS Feed. Following our examples, let’s add another CNN RSS feed to our list. Add whatever descriptive name you want to your new feed. This is how it will appear in the Pertelian LCD. Cut and paste the RSS URL here. NOTE: Make sure you leave nothing in front of the URL, that is, make sure there are no spaces or characters before “http:…”! • - Sports Scores Plug-ins Introduction: Ever since we started offering options for non-gamers, it wasn’t long before it dawned on us that a whole bunch of people always complain that they miss a sports event because either they forgot about it, they were busy working, or were deep in their game. Even when working at the office or at home, we all know that having the game on TV in the background doesn’t really allow for very productive work. Personally, I remember working for a brokerage firm and seeing my fellow co-workers sneaking peaks to their favorite sports sites to check out the current score. Although, not the same as sitting in front of the TV with nachos and a beer, we know that there are tons of times when you’d like to know the current score of a game but you’re just not able to flip on the TV or radio. This isn’t just for keeping up with the big games! With Pertelian, you have constant access to all major games playing that day in real time! To be constantly able to check the latest scores no matter what you’re doing at the time with a push of a keystroke is every sports fan’s dream. Configuration: Sports Scores is not configurable. • - TeamSpeak Support Plug-in Introduction: Hands down a “gamer only” feature, TeamSpeak support is one of the most successful, community suggested features, in the Pertelian software package. TeamSpeak is charge-free to non-commercial application that allows users to speak over the internet with PC connected microphones and speakers. A godsend to any online gamer, TeamSpeak allows people to coordinate, chat and work together on their favorite online game, not only doing away with unpractical text messaging but enhancing the gaming experience by orders of magnitude. Long hailed as a mandatory program for online gaming, the only downside with TeamSpeak is that you can’t see whose voice is coming over your speakers. Although TeamSpeak does have an interface window with indicators that light up when someone speaks, this window isn’t available while in-game. With online gaming communities many hundreds of players big, most groups are not able to put a screen name with a voice. When trying to group together as a squad or group, it’s very important to know who’s who. Well, now you can. Configuration: TeamSpeak Support is not configurable. Navigation: TEAMSPEAK SUPPORT MAIN TeamSpeak rooms. Numbers next to TeamSpeak rooms shows the number of people in room. Back (Control Alt A) – Returns you to Welcome/Music Main. • - Forum Watcher Plug-in Introduction: The end-all be-all evolution to one of the oldest internet traditions, Pertelian brings a new life to forums in a way never possible before. Forget about checking emails to see if there’s been a response to a thread your watching, forget refreshing that forum page every couple of minutes and remove all that useless clutter in your bookmarks, it’s time to make the internet (and by extension, forums) cater to you, and Pertelian will see to that . This feature attempts to ensure that the only time you go to check a thread you are interested in is when there is something new to look at (such as someone editing a statement or adding a post) and at the same time, Pertelian will bring you the thread page in an instant. After the ForeSight Systems Teams started using Forum Watcher, it became almost impossible for us to use forums without it. Bringing forums almost to real-time, Forum Watcher promises to be one of the most widely used plug-ins in Pertelian history and will hopefully earn a place on your tabletop. IMPORTANT NOTE: At the time this manual was created, Forum Watcher does not reliably respond to new posts in a multi-paged thread on a forum. Given the vast range of types of forums, Forum Watcher has become one of the toughest features to streamline. Until we’ve had a chance to adequately address this issue, we offer the following suggestions: - Many forums allow users to set the number of posts that will appear on a single page. Make sure you have the standard number of posts per page set up for that forum. It has been noted that changing the number of posts per page from the forum standard can interfere with Pertelian’s detection of new posts. - If a thread goes beyond page 1, make sure you have the URL that appears for the very latest page in Forum Watcher in order to receive updates. If you haven’t received an alert for some time, check to make sure that thread has not gone to another page. Due to the wide variety of forums, Forum Watcher may not work with certain forums. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please make sure you set the update interval at a reasonable number like 10 to 30 minutes. The reason is many forums count every time a thread page is accessed in order to help show how popular a thread is. For some forums, Forum Watcher triggers an increase in this count every time it goes to check that thread. Out of respect for these forums, please make sure to set this time limit to a reasonable level and above all, make sure you delete threads from Forum Watcher that you are no longer interested in checking. Moreover, including a multitude of threads and using a short interval time might significantly impact your computer resources as it constantly works to check your threads. 48
  • Configuration: Configuring Forum Watcher is almost exactly like configuring the RSS Aggregator plug-in. The only difference is that instead of putting an RSS feed URL, you’re putting a forum thread URL. Just in case, here are a couple of screenshots. Add/Remove threads to Current forum threads watch with Forum you are watching. Watcher Set how often you want Pertelian to check your threads for updates. Keep in mind that shorter update intervals will affect computer performance. Select a name for the thread you are watching. This is how it will appear in the Pertelian LCD. • - Pertelian® Monitor for eBay – Auction Monitor Introduction: The Pertelian® Monitor for eBay is the single most ambitious plug-in ever attempted by ForeSight Systems. Our goal is to bring eBay as close to the user as possible by allowing access to eBay auctions apart from emails and constant browser refreshes, essentially bringing the eBay marketplace right on your desktop. Say good-bye to book marking that “must have” item only to forget when the auction ends and have that bargain fall into the hands of someone else, Pertelian is now on duty to see that doesn’t happen again. Auction Monitor allows users to track eBay auctions as well as receive alerts when they’ve been out bided and receive various time alerts as an auction approaches its close time by simply placing the eBay item number into Auction Monitor. NOTE: Alerts will not work unless you have successfully configured Auction Monitor to your eBay login information. Auction Monitor requires you to enter your eBay username as well as login to the eBay service through the link provided in Auction Monitor. This allows Pertelian to retrieve a token and allows the various alerts to function properly. For more information about privacy issues, please refer to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy documents. Outbid Alerts: Auction Monitor must be properly configured to your eBay username. Once you bid on an eBay auction using the same username as was configured with Pertelian, the program will detect when you’ve been out bided on that auction and send you an alert in the Main Screen of the Pertelian LCD. Time Remaining Alerts: Users can set when they would like to receive a “heads up” alert when there’s a certain amount of time left in an auction. Auction Ended Alert: Select this alert to retrieve a notification when an auction ends either due to elapsed time or someone executing the “Buy it Now” option. Auction Monitor uses a smart system for checking on eBay auctions. The farther out an auction is to its end time, the less often it checks it. The closer an auction is to closing, Auction Monitor checks the auction more frequently, essentially showing a more and more real-time snapshot of configured eBay auctions as time goes on. If you do not receive timely displays and alerts, it is likely due to the fact that there is still a lot of time left in the auction. Configuration: Configuring this plug-in is a two part process. First, you need to enter your eBay login information in User Setup of the Pertelian Monitor® for eBay menu as shown below. Enter your eBay username as you would the eBay site. Once you do this, click on the “Login to eBay” link. What this does is allow Pertelian to retrieve a token from eBay, allowing the Pertelian Monitor® for eBay plug-in to act on your username. Follow the on screen directions, making sure to read all disclaimers and notices. Please read ForeSight Systems LLC Terms of Conditions and Privacy Policy concerning this plug-in and protecting your eBay information available on our website (www.pertelian.com) and in the default Pertelian folder. AT NO TIME does ForeSight Systems LLC ever have access to, transmit, or make available your eBay information. Protecting this confidential information is your responsibility. Make sure that the username you submitted and that which appears on User Setup are one and the same, then click “Get your token”. After several seconds, you should see a long string of random character appear in the box below. This 51
  • means Pertelian Monitor® for eBay is configured to your eBay username and ready for business. When all is said and done, your screen should look something like this: Step 1: Your eBay username goes here. Step 2: After you put your username, click here and follow the on-screen directions Step 3: Finally, click here to get your eBay token. Once this is done, go to Auction Monitor and you can begin to place eBay item numbers here. From this screen, you can set which alerts you would like to place on any of your listed auctions. All current auctions you have access to on Auction Monitor appear here. Enter a new eBay auction number here and click “Add”. • - IRC Support Introduction: Along with the other two features released in Version 4, a focus on bringing some of the most successful and tested aspects of the net has brought about including one of the oldest and arguably most widely used method of chatting available on the internet called IRC or Internet Relay Chat. Much akin to a large system of chat rooms, each “channel” has a distinct “address” of sorts and is governed by that IRC network (for example: DALnet) which you are connecting to. To this end, ForeSight Systems has developed its own IRC Client allowing all Pertelian users to finally connect with their favorite IRC channels with the same freedom as other Pertelian supported IM Chat users enjoy. Usually the domain of “people-in-the-know”, IRC’s simple, robust nature lends itself to a very wide range of uses and forgoes all the heavy software overhead associated with more mainstream IM chat options such as AIM, YAHOO! Messenger, and MSN Messenger. Because of these characteristics, IRC has seen extensive use in venues such as common interest chat rooms, gaming communities, corporate offices, computer development teams and many others. Configuration: Not so much a configuration screen as it is the portal to enter an IRC channel, the IRC Support configuration screen contains the fields you would expect in order to start chatting. Once setup, you can connect to the Default Channel by going to the IRC Support plug-in in the Pertelian LCD using the Next Function hotkeys. Once there, you will come upon the IRC Logging Screen which will require you to hit the Enter hotkey (Default Control Alt Q) in order to enter the channel. This prevents multiple copies of your screen name to appear in any given channel. The IRC Server URL goes here. Port number goes here. Nickname you want to appear when chatting. When selected, whenever you start Pertelian, you will join this The channel you would channel. like to first be placed in when you connect. NOTE: As stated above, once this information is set in IRC Setup, go to the IRC Support plug-in using the Next Function or Previous Function hotkeys (Default: Control Alt 3/Control Alt E)) and connect using Enter (Default: Control Alt Q). This will connect you to the default channel specified in IRC Setup. 54

NOTE: Remember that different IRC servers have their own commands that allow you to go from one channel to another and perform certain other functions. For example, /join #channel usually allows you to enter another channel. Please make sure you are familiar with that server’s IRC commands so that you can employ them through Pertelian as well. In most servers /quit will disconnect you from a channel which will take you back to the IRC Logging Screen. 56
  • How To’s and Troubleshooting This section is intended to help you utilize some of the more advanced features of the product and helps to answer some questions about the Pertelian menu system and functionalities. Finally, this section also serves as a trouble-shoot guide for common questions. As the next release progresses, we hope to expand this section of the manual. Hardware Questions What’s that bar across the top of the LCD when I plug it in? Application Questions I installed the Pertelian program but I don’t get the Welcome Screen on the LCD. How do I talk inside a game? How will I know when I receive an Instant Message? What are hotkeys and how do I set them? Where are all the functions and how do I get to them? What are RSS Feeds and how do I use them with Pertelian? Why don’t I have Pertelian Monitor for eBay? I don’t receive accurate eBay auction details and timely alerts. Q: What's that bar across the top of the LCD when I plug it in? A: The line of solid characters is just part of the initialization routine of the LCD and the LCD is working properly. Q: I installed the Pertelian program but I don’t get the Welcome Screen on the LCD. A: Most likely the COM needs to be set to the correct number. By default the application looks for the LCD hardware under COM 3. If COM 3 is already in use, however, the LCD might be assigned another COM. To check which COM port it is operating under, in the Hardware Manager look under Ports, and find the "USB Serial Port (COM X)" where X corresponds to the COM port number. In the application configuration under the main screen, just set the COM port to this number and click the "Connect" button next to it. Also, make sure the Pertelian LCD is plugged into your USB port during installation. Q: How do I talk while inside a game? A: Make sure you have configured your Instant Message program as stated in this manual. Instructions can also be found on our website at http://www.Pertelian.com/downloads.htm. The purpose of the steps outlined are to ensure that dialog message windows do not appear in the Windows foreground, kicking you out of your running game application. Q: How will I know when I received an Instant Message? A: The LCD will begin to flash to notify you that a new chat session has been initiated. Simply go to the IM Screen to read the new message and stop the flash. 57
  • Q: What are hotkeys? How do I set them? A: Hotkeys are the specific keys which are mapped with the Pertelian application to be used to control the various Pertelian functionalities. To configure them, click on the "Global Hotkeys" label in the Pertelian application Q: Where are all the functions? How do I get to them? A: Functions have their own special hotkeys to cycle through them. The hotkeys are "Next Function" and "Previous Function". The "Back" hotkey will always take you back to the Main Screen from any function. Functions can be configured by clicking on the "Function Settings " label in the Pertelian application. You can also configure each specific function, disable/enable them, or just rearrange them to your liking. Q: What are RSS Feeds and how do I use them with Pertelian? A: RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication”. Many websites have started to offer RSS Feeds as a quick and easy means for users to glance over changes in articles shown on the website. Almost anything that can be broken down in discrete terms can be communicated through RSS. Many news-sites have adopted this method of syndication which allows users to easily stay afloat of new articles being displayed on the website without having to visit the site. In order to implement RSS Feeds in your Pertelian LCD, first you should know what to look for. Many of the website that offer RSS, have an icon on their main page that looks something like this, or this . Although many websites differ from that point on, somewhere in the following page should be internet addresses that lead to the RSS source. Go to the Pertelian software and select the menu “Plug-ins”. Select the RSS feature and click “Configure”. Right click on the main white screen on the center of the window and click “Add”. Where it says “Feed Name,” write in the name you want to appear on your Pertelian LCD. For instance, if you are adding the “top stories” RSS for a news site, a good name might be “Top Stories”. On the second line, copy the address given to you by the website and click ok. It should appear on your Pertelian LCD in a few seconds. Please note that many formats for RSS exist and we are constantly working to support as many of these as possible. If you find an RSS feed that is not working with your Pertelian LCD, please send us an email with the website address of the source you are having problems with. Q: Why don’t I have Pertelian Monitor for eBay? A: This feature was not completed at the time the CD’s were made. A new version including this plug-in will be made available free for download from the company website www.pertelian.com Support – Files. 58
  • Q: I don’t receive accurate eBay auction details and timely alerts. A: Auction Monitor uses a smart system for checking on eBay auctions. 59
  • - Known Issues As this is the very first model of the Pertelian line of LCDs there are a few issues known to the design team at the time of the making of this manual. Please refer to this section if you are experiencing any problems with the product. NOTE: If you are experiencing a problem and it has not been addressed below, please go to the Pertelian forums, http://pertelian.com/forums/index.php. It is likely your issue has already either been addressed by the Pertelian Team or brought up by another user. If you are putting a new issue on our forum, please include as much information about your system and the specific symptoms you are seeing. We are very active on our forums and address all issues posted. 1) One of the Pertelian plug-ins disappeared from the list of plug-ins Sometimes a Pertelian plug-in drops out of the list of plug-ins. This usually happens when a user makes a change to their computer’s hardware such as adding RAM or during the installation of a new version of Pertelian. If this happens, uninstall Pertelian and make sure that all remnant files are deleted after uninstalling. Make a fresh installation of Pertelian. If the missing plug-in does not reappear in the plug-in list, click the “Reload” button in the plug-in menu in the Pertelian GUI. 2) Sometimes after running Pertelian for a while, Windows reports Pertelian using excessive amounts of memory Although rare, some cases of excessive memory usage have been reported. So far, this problem has not occurred consistently and corrects itself upon the restarting of the Pertelian application. 3) TeamSpeak names are not showing on Pertelian It has been reported that on very large TeamSpeak servers, particularly those which have 30+ people in a single room begin to experience names not appearing in the TeamSpeak Pertelian plug-in. We are currently looking into this issue. 4) Pertelian hangs or shows other problems when I put my computer in hibernation. We are aware of this issue and are looking into getting it resolved in an up coming release. 5) Pertelian does not work with Yahoo 8.0 We are working to get Pertelian up to date with all of the latest chat software. 6) Pertelian crashes when I go to the TeamSpeak plug-in when TeamSpeak is not running and I hit Pertelian hotkey (Enter) We are aware of this issue and are looking into getting it resolved in an up coming release. 7) Sometimes I get blank blocks in the LCD when chatting Sometimes, especially when sending automated responses, the chat program (such as AIM, YAHOO!) will send a “blank message” which Pertelian picks up as a separate 60
  • normal message. We are aware of this issue and are looking into getting it resolved in an up coming release. 8) Email counter and IM counter (E0 I0) doesn’t increment or decrement properly We are aware of this issue and are looking into getting it resolved in an up coming release. 9) Forum Watcher does not alert me when there is a new post on one of the threads I’m watching At the time this manual was created, Forum Watcher does not reliably respond to new posts in a multi-paged thread on a forum. A patch is already in the works to allow users to change the number of posts per page and not interfere with Pertelian and should be available in early October of 2006. - If a thread goes beyond page 1, make sure you have the URL that appears for the very latest page in Forum Watcher in order to receive updates. If you haven’t received an alert for some time, check to make sure that thread has not gone to another page. Please keep in mind that this is a very complex functionality. Given the enormous range of forums out there on the internet, many may exist for which Forum Watcher is not able to track correctly. If you experience a problem with Forum Watcher tracking single page threads, please go to the Pertelian forums and express your issues and the forum to which you are applying Forum Watcher. It is also very important to note that thread pages which change constantly (such as with the use of some advertisements or automated notice postings) will not lend themselves to be used with Forum Watcher, as they will generate frequent alerts with no substantial change in the page. Due to the wide variety of forums, Forum Watcher may not work with certain forums. 10) The Systems Stats plug-in has completely disappeared from the Pertelian GUI and does not cycle in the LCD. We are aware of this issue and are looking into getting it resolved in an up coming release. 11) Adding new thread entries in Forum Watcher while in the Forum Watcher feature in the LCD causes it to remain in “Updating…” 61
  • Sometimes adding entries too quickly bogs Pertelian down. Go into the Forum Watcher configuration screen and increase the refresh time and wait for Pertelian to catch up. Refresh times should be set to 15 to 30 minutes for best results. 12) I place an item into Pertelian monitor for eBay but I only see the eBay item number followed by three dots. It won’t let me go into Auction Details. Seeing only the eBay item number followed by three dots means that Pertelian is unable to find the eBay item entered. Please check the eBay item number is correct. Sometimes, Pertelian takes a minute or two to find the item, please be patient. 62
