  3. 3. The Coast Guard is: the C.A.N. “National Program Manager” They Appointed the Auxiliary as their, “National Liaison”
  4. 4. Why the Coast Guard needs C.A.N. The U S has 300,000 square miles of shoreline to watch …..
  5. 5. That Security is the job of the U. S. Coast Guard & Auxiliary. They can’t do it alone, and need you.
  6. 6. <ul><li>U.S. Coast Guard Commandant instruction </li></ul><ul><li>16618.8 established the America’s Waterway Watch program on February 10, 2005. </li></ul><ul><li>The program’s purpose is to raise national awareness among those who work, live, or recreate on or near the water. </li></ul>
  7. 7. C.A.N. needs members who live in view of navigable waterways, to assist the Coast Guard with their missions. C.A.N . Is a group of volunteers dedicated to the guardianship of America’s waterways.
  8. 8. <ul><li>If you are a: </li></ul><ul><li>tow boat operator </li></ul><ul><li>marina operator, </li></ul><ul><li>or otherwise live or work </li></ul><ul><li>around America's waterways, </li></ul><ul><li>the Coast Guard wants your help in </li></ul><ul><li>keeping these areas safe. </li></ul><ul><li>You can do this by participating in C.A.N. </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li> </li></ul><ul><li>What CAN members do: </li></ul><ul><li>Fill out a CAN application. </li></ul><ul><li>Be available when the Coast Guard calls to: </li></ul><ul><li>Give whatever information they’re capable of, </li></ul><ul><li>to aid the Coast Guard in their mission. </li></ul><ul><li>Report anything that seems unusual on the </li></ul><ul><li>waterways to the Coast Guard. </li></ul>
  10. 10. <ul><li>Citizen’s Action Network Application Form </li></ul><ul><li>By submitting this form, you are agreeing to the </li></ul><ul><li>release of your information to the U.S. Coast </li></ul><ul><li>Guard. </li></ul><ul><li>This applications gives location and other details about the member’s residence to the Coast Guard. </li></ul>
  11. 11. The Coast Guard maintains a CAN member database… Data is added only by Coast Guard personnel and is not shared with any other law enforcement databases.
  12. 12. <ul><li>Auxiliary CAN members can be given special equipment </li></ul><ul><li>such as night vision goggles and special binoculars. </li></ul>The Auxiliary would like to offer training to all CAN members.
  13. 13. What C.A.N. is not: <ul><li>C.A.N. members are not agents of the government. </li></ul><ul><li>C.A.N. does not emphasize that individuals engage in </li></ul><ul><li>surveillance or other activities that are intrusive or illegal. </li></ul>
