  • Dr. Yulin Lim Bio-data Yulin Lim, a participant of Outward Bound School of Malaysia received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1989 from Hawaii Pacific University, USA, where she studied Marketing and Travel Industry Management. She also received her MBA in Marketing from Hawaii Pacific University, USA in 1990. In recognition of her outstanding merit and accomplishment as a student, she was inducted into several Honor Societies namely Phi Sigma, Delta Mu Delta and Who’s Who Among Students In American Universities & Colleges. From 1985 to date, a total of more than 2 decades of working life; 18 years as a corporate professional and 10 years as a corporate consultant. She has gained tremendous experience in the following industries: Banking, Boating, Computer Manufacturing, Computer Retailing, Courier and Freight Services, Education, Electronics, Food, Gem Manufacturing, Healthcare, Hotel, Industrial Supplies, Information Technology, Logistics, Packaging, Printing, Property, Retail, Trading, Telecommunications and Tourism. Over the years, she has developed her strategic and operational leadership competencies in Corporate and Academic Facilitation, Customer Service and Retention, E-Commerce, IT Services, People Management, Project Management, Product Marketing, Sales Management, Services Operations and Telemarketing. Her significant success to date is contributed by her previous jobs as well as her current profession as a corporate consultant. From 1992 - 1995, she was attached to FedEx, where she was the Regional Sales Manager to pioneer the courier business. Her main job function was to assume overall responsibility of a sales and marketing department including training, budgeting, formulating and implementing strategies and management directions to ensure the achievement of the company’s objectives. While assuming this challenging role, with her teaching certification from the Ministry of Education of Malaysia, Yulin pursued her interest as a part-time Marketing lecturer (from 1991- 1992) attached to Cyma (Stamford) College where she was lecturing Charted Institute of Marketing (CIM) courses mainly at a Diploma level. In FedEx, with her additional experience as a lecturer, she had the ability to coach 5 Sales Professionals effectively on the fundamental elements of the sales function. Apart from this, she assisted to facilitate Quality Action Teams and Process Redesign Processes. Yulin prides herself to have been able to accomplish a challenging task yet meeting her business goal by achieving 106% of her target resulting USD1M in the preliminary sales revenue in 1994. She joined Dell Asia Pacific Sdn in 1995 as a Regional Telephone Account Management - Sales Manager to pioneer the Asia Pacific call-center operations. Today, she is very well versed in new call center start-ups. Her biggest achievement was setting and developing the entire inside sales team that supports the Asia Pacific Region. This has led to a spin off in the Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia markets with an average of 115% above plan in terms of revenue goal under her leadership. Due to her proven performance within the 9 months at Dell, her responsibility expanded to include managing the Taiwan, Macau, Brunei and Thailand market. Subsequently she was promoted to Sales Manager II after 1 1/2 years in Dell. In the Sales department, her main job responsibility included management of the sales and customer support activities of the sales team, staffing (recruitment and selection of staff), budgeting, developing quality processes and procedures, setting schedules and rosters, managing campaigns and coaching 25 Sales Professionals on the fundamentals of Sales.   • In 1997, Yulin was promoted to Executive Briefing Center (EBC) Senior Manager where she was responsible for the entire region’s EBC start-up, beginning with the Penang’s facility, followed by the Xiamen, China plant and in Singapore, the Asia Pacific Regional office. Due to her remarkable success and performance, in 1998, she assumed additional responsibilities as the first multi-metrics Senior Manager over-seeing 2 business units: Executive Briefing Center and the Proposal Center. In December 1998, the Leadership Team in Asia Pacific decided to enhance the TRU (total revenue per unit) of the sales operations by focusing on the business unit call ‘Dellware’. The opportunities and the challenges were to design and put together processes from scratch. Notable achievements were: • Developed a relationship with a pool of world renowned third party vendors to support the fulfillment of Dellware business. • Designed and institutionalized weekly / monthly reporting process and system for clarity of data’s and pro-active opportunity management. • Organized and mobilized the efforts and contributions of ten (10) functional areas to work on product merging project to ensure smooth order fulfillment. • Designed / developed marketing programs to achieve product penetration through sales training, vendor management and marketing communication. Yulin as the Project Leader spearheaded this one (1) year project. It has resulted in revenue per box growth from USD1.00 to USD30.00. While she holds the position of Dellware Senior Business Development Manager (BDM) for Asia, she was the acting BDM for Australia / New Zealand for 9 months and continued to assume the role of BDM for China. In March 2000, Yulin was appointed the Senior Operations Manager for Dell AP Online. She worked with 2 managers, 3 project specialists and 4 interns covering the entire Asia Pacific business. The team was responsible for all Online operations including project management, content management, service and support management and site maintenance. The most significant achievement to date is the launch of a fully localized Dell China web site in simplified Chinese. This has resulted in total sales of USD74.8M in Quarter 3, financial year FY’01. While being responsible for the regional operations, Yulin was assigned to handle the Large Corporate Account Malaysia Online sales in mid-Q2. With her experience in this field, Yulin brought the team to exceed over USD1M in their revenue target. Due to her outstanding accomplishment, again, Yulin was requested to assist in other Dell Sales Channels. Her strong sales leadership continued to bring the Home and Small Business Division’s (HSB) segment – E-Order rate to a greater height, from 0.6% to 10.6% in Q3. These successes were contributed by Yulin’s capability to drive for results, and her ability to work with various functional teams to bring a win-win environment. Hence, Yulin was rated 2 (in a performance rating of 1 to 4) (Met key plan objectives and performance expectations and exceeded many. Demonstrated expertise in all job functions.) for her performance in year FY01. Yulin moved to Dell Services Division in year 2001 as the Senior Manager for Services Inside Sales where she was responsible for 6 portfolios within the Services Marketing team; thus making her one of the 5 key senior players in the team which holds a revenue quota of USD256M in FY02 and USD570M in FY03. In this capacity, Yulin pioneered the Sales Bridging, Database Support, APOS Business Unit (after point of sale) and Touchless Operations; after which she was assigned additional responsibilities to include Services Development Engineering (SDE) and Services Sales Operations (SSO); managing a growing team from 6 to 17 team members within a 12-month period. She was rated 1 (Exceeded key plan objectives and performance expectations. Demonstrated initiative and mastery of all job functions.) for her performance in year FY03.   • As part of her quest to be a more all rounded person, Yulin pursued her Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) degree at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). She completed her doctoral degree in February 2012. The title of the thesis was Predictors of Organizational Commitment among the Malaysian Generation Y Workforce. She obtained a C.G.P.A. of 3.90. With a conscious mind of putting aside time to indulge in worthy causes, her love for teaching sees Yulin as an adjunct lecturer at University of Malaya (UMCCED). Being aware of the current challenges faced by employers pertaining to the quality of the Malaysian graduates today, coupled with the government’s objective to become a high income nation with knowledge-based society, Yulin feels that she has a role to play in strengthening the proficiency of the business knowledge which is at stake now, by adopting a more innovative, realistic and interactive learning approaches. In line with the upcoming Education Blueprint of Malaysia where critical and creative thinking will be incorporated into the curriculum, Yulin pursued her certification in Dr. Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats ® Method for corporations and students and now she is a fully authorized and certified licensed instructor for this world-class thinking program. Being a change agent, she helps students to modify their learning approaches or adopt a more effective methodology to suit their pace of learning; and reminding them that attaining knowledge is a self-made journey.
