    • Library of Congress call numbers Before you can use the library catalog effectively, you'll need to understand Library of Congress call numbers. Some of you may be more familiar with the Dewey Decimal System of organizing books, which is used in most public and high school libraries. Please watch this short video for an introduction. • The Catalog Students can use the library catalog to locate books, DVDs, and other materials housed physically within the library. To get to the library catalog, first go to the library home page. The web address for CCC Library is: www.carteret.edu/library On the library home page, click on the “Search Library Catalog” link. • Catalog Searching You can search the catalog using any of the keyword fields you see in the image. If you're looking for a particular title, you'll want to use the Title field. For example, if you want to see if the library has a copy of The Color Purple, type that into the Title field. LC Call Numbers Limiters Sorting Results Placing a Hold Interlibrary Loan Collections
    • Catalog Searching If you're looking for works by a particular author, use the Author field. Usually, though, you will not have a particular book or author in mind— instead you will have a topic. To see what items are available on a topic, use the Subject or Words or Phrase fields. As the Words or Phrase search is the most broad, we recommend you start there. LC Call Numbers Limiters Sorting Results Placing a Hold Interlibrary Loan Collections
    • As with most types of databases, the library catalog also includes "limiters”. Limiters allow you to only search certain portions of the catalog. Use “Power Search” to begin a search using limiters or “Limit Search” to limit search results. We recommend using the “location” limiter. By selecting a location, you can weed out big parts of the collection you know you’re not interested in. • Finally, you may occasionally want to change the way your search returns are sorted. So if you wanted to sort the returns alphabetically by title, you could select "Title." Or if you wanted to see the most recently published books first, you could select “New to Old." LC Call Numbers Limiters Catalog Searching Sorting Results Placing a Hold Interlibrary Loan Collections
    • At times you may need a book that is already checked out to another library patron. The catalog allows you to place a hold on any book. Once the book is returned, the library will contact you by phone and hold the book for you at the circulation desk. To place a hold, either call or stop by the circulation desk, or else use the “Place Hold” button in the catalog. • After clicking the “Place Hold” button, you will be asked for your User ID and PIN number. Your User ID is simply your library card number. Your PIN number is whatever 4-digit number you requested when you first registered for your library card. If you have forgotten your PIN number, or do not have one, call or stop by the circulation desk and we will add a PIN to your account. • Sometimes the library will not have a particular book you need. The Interlibrary Loan service allows you to borrow books from other libraries through CCC Library. As the process is fairly time intensive, it can take approximately 10 business days to receive a loan through ILL. To request materials through Interlibrary Loan, you will need to fill out an ILL form. These are available at the Circulation Desk. Be sure to indicate any deadlines you may have on your form. The library will call you when your materials arrive. Be aware that the length of an interlibrary loan checkout and the number of possible renewals is as the discretion of the lending library, not CCC Library. • The Collections The nearly 20,000 items housed physically within the library are all divided into various collections around the library. In order to pull a book off the shelf, you will need to know its call number and the collection it is in. Now we’ll look at each collection. • Bestseller & New Books Collection The Bestseller Collection and New Books Collection are kept together near the Circulation Desk. Here you'll find recent bestselling works of fiction. New non-fiction works are placed in the New Books Collection. LC Call Numbers Limiters Catalog Searching Sorting Results Placing a Hold Interlibrary Loan Collections
